Konawaena ace Grace now at St. Francis

Defending Division II softball state champion St. Francis got a boost with the arrival of junior pitcher Shaylann Grace, a transfer from Konawaena. Grace helped the Wildcats reach the semifinals of the 2017 Division II state tournament. St. Francis rallied to edge Konawaena 8-7 and went on to capture the state title with a win over Kamehameha-Hawaii in the final. Kamehameha hires coaches in baseball, softball, soccer

Daryl Kitagawa is the new baseball coach at Kamehameha, the school announced as one of three new hires Wednesday. Kitagawa takes over for Kahi Kaanoi, who was hired on interim basis in February. Prior to that, Tom Perkins was the Warriors’ baseball coach. The school also hired Leo Sing Chow for softball and Uri Barron-Silva for boys soccer. Roosevelt’s Foster is Gatorade softball POY

Roosevelt’s Mari Foster was named as the Hawaii Gatorade softball player of the year by the Gatorade Company recently. The award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence, high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character on and off the field. The 5-foot-7 senior outfielder and right-handed pitcher led the Rough Riders (15-3) to the Division I tournament play-in game. A busy offseason of learning and applying knowledge helped junior outfielder Alyssa Asuncion of Leilehua become an All-State first-team outfielder. Asuncion hit .488 with an OBP of .560 and a slugging percentage of .814.
