Waianae softball team makes statement

By Christian Shimabuku on April 18, 2019

Waianae wasn’t fazed by No. 2 Roosevelt’s previously undefeated record heading into Thursday’s OIA quarterfinals. Come playoff time, every team comes in with a clean slate. So when the Seariders (9-5) dealt the Rough Riders (12-1) their first loss of the season in a 7-4 victory at Stevenson Middle School, it wasn’t necessarily viewed as an upset to those on the team that put the work in, despite the discrepancy in seeding. Waianae entered as the No. 4 seed from […]

Without ace Mele Turner, Castle falls in playoffs to Kapolei

By Paul Honda on April 17, 2019

Two teams, battling for playoff life, at opposite ends of the same cycle. Kapolei knows Castle’s struggle well. Though the Lady Knights had a solid regular season, they entered Wednesday’s opening-round playoff game against Kapolei without their top pitcher, Mele Turner. The Lady Knights stayed close, but couldn’t overcome four errors in a 4-2 loss, ending their season. The young squad with just two senior starters has plenty of promise for the 2020 season. “This is a good bunch of […]

Punahou 1 step closer to ending 14-year ILH title drought

By Billy Hull on April 15, 2019

Punahou’s eighth-inning, walk-off 8-7 victory over ‘Iolani on Monday to win the ILH regular season didn’t end in jubilation for the home team. Part of the reason was ‘Iolani third baseman Taylor Kai getting knocked over on the final play and hitting her head, which had Raiders coach Benny Agbayani concerned about her availability for the ILH postseason tournament beginning Wednesday. As coaches and trainers checked on Kai, every Punahou player took a knee and waited until Agbayani gave the […]

One of two teams to finish undefeated in the OIA softball regular season, the Roosevelt Rough Riders have earned their highest ranking ever in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Top 10. The Rough Riders (12-0 OIA East) are tied with Punahou (13-3 ILH D-I) for No. 2 in the latest rankings released today behind No. 1 Campbell (12-0 OIA West), which holds down the top spot for a seventh consecutive week. Roosevelt is ranked No. 2 for the first time since April […]

D-II St. Francis forces Punahou into ILH D-I softball tiebreaker

By Christian Shimabuku on April 13, 2019

St. Francis coach Randy Langsi says his team plays every game like it’s their last. With the school set to close at the end of May, maybe that line of thinking is warranted. But against No. 2 Punahou, the No. 9 Saints were up against the ILH’s elite. A petition for St. Francis to move up from Division II to Division I in ILH and state competition was denied twice on March 22, and Friday’s game at Ala Wai Park […]

Jaeda Cabunoc’s toughness makes No. 3 Roosevelt a contender

By Paul Honda on April 9, 2019

The pain shot through Jaeda Cabunoc’s back, one pitch at a time. On a sunny, windy, dusty afternoon at Kaiser’s softball field, the Roosevelt ace did what she could to focus on the task at hand. She delivered again, leading No. 3 Roosevelt to a 3-2 comeback win over Kaiser. The Rough Riders are 11-0 in the OIA East with one game left before the playoffs. Since the start of the season, the senior right-hander has dealt with increased pain […]

Maryknoll softball continues wild ride in rankings

By Billy Hull on April 8, 2019

For the defending ILH softball champion Maryknoll Spartans, the 2019 season has been a wild ride. Ranked as high as No. 2 at one point this season, the Spartans nearly fell out of the top 10 last week only to bounce back to No. 6 in the latest Honolulu Star-Advertiser Softball Top 10 released today. The Spartans have won four in a row to climb within 1 1/2 games of league-leading Punahou with two games remaining in the ILH regular […]
