Expect fireworks in ‘Iolani/Leilehua softball final

By Billy Hull on May 4, 2019

Eleven runs in each of their first three games has been enough for the ‘Iolani Raiders to reach the Division I final in the Datahouse/HHSAA Softball State Championships at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. But will it be enough to defeat the defending state champion Leilehua Mules, who have scored 44 runs in their three games? “Nope,” ‘Iolani coach Benny Agbayani said matter-of-factly after ‘Iolani’s 11-8 win over Baldwin on Friday night. “Nothing is enough to beat Leilehua. They’re a tough […]

DAY 3: Punahou/Leilehua, ‘Iolani/Baldwin in state softball semis

By Billy Hull on May 3, 2019

After a wild quarterfinal round, only No. 2 seed Punahou remains of the four league champions in the Datahouse/HHSAA Softball State Championships in Division I. The Buffanblu and Leilehua meet in a rematch of last year’s state final in the first game, followed by MIL runner-up Baldwin and ILH runner-up ‘Iolani. The offenses have dominated the tournament with a record 27 homers already having been hit in the first two rounds. The one exception is Baldwin junior Aliya Harmon, who […]

Offensive numbers reach absurd levels in state softball tournament

By Billy Hull on May 2, 2019

‘Iolani softball coach Benny Agbayani summed it up by saying it’s the amount of talent in Hawaii. Leilehua coach Wendell Au said there are a lot more hitting coaches than pitching coaches. Whatever the reason, and there are plenty of them, the offensive numbers in the Datahouse/HHSAA Softball State Championships through two days is absolutely mind blowing. The defending champion Mules combined with Lahainaluna to score a record 31 runs in the Mules’ 21-10 win in six innings on Thursday […]

State softball tournament about to obliterate record for most homers

By Jerry Campany on May 2, 2019

Hawaii’s hitters had quite a launch party on the first day of the Division I state softball championships at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. There were 13 home runs hit in the four games. Those 13 dingers trails the record 16 hit by the field in 2016. Last year’s entire tournament had 12 home runs, and there are seven games left in this edition. The game changed in 2011, when there was an average of 6.59 runs scored and 12 balls […]

‘Iolani poised to make a run in tournament dominated by offense

By Billy Hull on May 1, 2019

After watching Baldwin rack up 17 hits in a 10-2 win over Maryknoll to open the Datahouse/HHSAA Softball State Championships, ‘Iolani and Waianae waged an offensive battle that looks like it will be the norm for the entire four-day tournament. Both teams were held scoreless in an inning only once with the Raiders pulling out an 11-10 victory on Wednesday to advance to the quarterfinals against BIIF champion Kealakehe today at Noon at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Even with a […]
