No official word was given on how many girls were injured, but all of them (passengers in a team rental van) except one played in the game. The other one did not play due […]

Unseeded ‘Iolani, Pearl City lock horns for state title

By Nick Abramo on February 10, 2018

The two most recent girls soccer state champions are meeting for the 2018 koa trophy Saturday night at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. Defending champion ‘Iolani (14-3-1) — an extremely balanced team — meets 2016 titlist Pearl City (16-1), which brings in what has been arguably the state’s most dangerous attack the last three seasons. The Chargers have strength all over the field, too, but they usually succeed when their offense soars. Interestingly, both teams are unseeded. ‘Iolani blanked OIA champion […]

By Paul Honda on February 9, 2018

Soraya Santos knows the jitters, Naomi Takata knows compassion and Frank Baumholtz knows what it’s like to have a heartbeat again. Pearl City’s stunning 1-0 sudden victory over No. 1 seed Kamehameha on Thursday night is instantly one of the biggest quarterfinal upsets in recent memory. Pearl City (15-1), the OIA’s third-place team, last won the state title in 2016. Kamehameha (12-2-1), the ILH champion, was seeking its first title since ’14. The Chargers pulled out the clutch victory as […]

Campbell on wrong end of unfortunate mistake

By Nick Abramo on February 8, 2018

Looking at only one side of the story, the Campbell girls soccer team fell victim not only in a playoff match, but also to mistakes made by the Oahu Interscholastic Association. But there is another side. The league asserts that due to confusion and miscommunication about the rules on how to break a tie, an unusual decision was made, but ultimately, once that decision was made, there is no going back. People on both sides of it, however, believe that […]
