VIDEO: Baldwin/HPA congratulate each other

By Nick Abramo on February 18, 2018

Enemies one minute. Brothers the next. A dramatic, back-and-forth Division I state boys soccer final between Baldwin and Hawaii Prep on Saturday night was in overtime, tied 0-0 and about to reach its conclusion at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. Little did anyone know that a lightning delay would eventually lead to the cancellation of the rest of the contest and instead of having the first state D-I champion from the Neighbor Islands, we have two. Soon after, the Bears and […]

Baldwin, HPA soccer: ‘The glass is half full’

By Nick Abramo on February 18, 2018

It is fitting and a shame at the same time. Baldwin and Hawaii Prep tried so desperately to become the first team from the Neighbor Islands to win a Division I state soccer championship. Instead, both of them get that title. That’s where the “fitting” part comes in. They both deserve it and they are both co-champs — the Bears from Maui and Ka Makani from the Big Island. It’s a shame that they didn’t get to finish what they […]

Baldwin and Hawaii Prep are soccer co-champions

By Hawaii Prep World on February 17, 2018

The Division I championship game of the Queen’s Medical Center/HHSAA Boys Soccer State Championships was postponed late Saturday night due to weather. Baldwin and Hawaii Prep played to a scoreless tie through regulation and were in overtime when lightning in the area forced the game to be stopped. The weather did not let up and it was decided to postpone the game. The teams have decided not to restart the game in the morning. Co-champions will be crowned in boys […]

Baldwin KOs Punahou to set up all-N.I. final

By Nick Abramo on February 16, 2018

They come from the Neighbor Islands, but the Baldwin Bears were anything but neighborly to Punahou on Friday night at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. The Bears pulled off a 3-1 shocker against the Buffanblu to move on to the Division I boys soccer state final against Hawaii Prep on Saturday night in what will be the first all-outer-island championship game. Kane Palazzotto knows how tough it is to make it this far, especially coming from Maui. “We were the last […]

OIA shut out of boys soccer D-I semifinals

By Christian Shimabuku on February 15, 2018

After a stunning turn of events on Thursday afternoon, Friday’s HHSAA Division I boys’ soccer semifinals will include three neighbor-island teams and zero OIA squads. Instead, it will feature two MIL teams in fourth-seeded Baldwin and King Kekaulike, as well as No. 3 seed Hawaii Prep from the BIIF and top seed Punahou from the ILH. The upset that made this scenario possible was King Kekaulike’s 2-1 victory over No. 2 Kalani at Waipahu. The Falcons entered Thursday undefeated at […]

Kapolei bounces back to beat Kaiser to start states

By Billy Hull on February 12, 2018

With 10 returning seniors from a team that won an OIA championship last season and has made the final four of the state tournament the last two years, Kapolei had no business finishing in sixth place in the OIA boys soccer playoffs. But that’s exactly where the Hurricanes ended up after finishing second in the OIA West in the regular season. A stunning 1-0 loss to Moanalua in the quarterfinals and a 2-1 defeat against Pearl City in the fifth-place […]

HPA’s Perry sad to see these 2 fly the nest

By Nick Abramo on February 11, 2018

Hawaii Prep soccer coach Steve Perry takes special pride in treating his team as a completely different unit than the version of the squad he coached the year before. That thinking helps alleviate the feeling of, “Well, we were good last year so we’ll automatically be good again this year.” So, in Perry’s mind, instead of one large blur of Ka Makani success in the form of five straight Division II state championships, he can break it down into increments […]

State titlist ‘Iolani was on brink of elimination

By Nick Abramo on February 10, 2018

Fullback Kelsey Wong will always remember the nerve-racking feeling she had Jan. 29. That’s when her ‘Iolani Raiders faced elimination even though they weren’t playing a match that day. Across town, at Kamehemameha, if the host Warriors lost to Punahou, it would have spelled doom for the Raiders, taking them out of state-tournament consideration. Luckily, for ‘Iolani, the Warriors won that game. It left the door open for the Raiders, who eventually muscled all the way through to their second […]
