Kalani clicks at Prep Soccer Showcase

Next week the state will get its first hint if the Baldwin Bears boys soccer team still has some of the magic it ended last season with. The ninth edition of the 808 Prep Soccer Showcase kicks off on Wednesday, Nov. 14 and run through Saturday with all games at Kapolei High School. Kamehameha hires coaches in baseball, softball, soccer

Daryl Kitagawa is the new baseball coach at Kamehameha, the school announced as one of three new hires Wednesday. Kitagawa takes over for Kahi Kaanoi, who was hired on interim basis in February. Prior to that, Tom Perkins was the Warriors’ baseball coach. The school also hired Leo Sing Chow for softball and Uri Barron-Silva for boys soccer. Kaiser’s Halvorsen wins Gatorade honor

Kaiser’s Kaile Halvorsen, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser All-State player of the year from this past season, was named the Gatorade Hawaii girls soccer state player of the year today. Halvorsen is a finalist for the national Gatorade award which will be announced later this month. ‘Iolani’s senior midfielder Alex Liu was named the Hawaii Gatorade boys soccer player of the year by the Gatorade Company recently. The award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence, high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character on and off the field. The 5-foot-5, 135-pound Liu scored 15 goals and added 17 assists, leading the Raiders (14-4-3) to the Division I state quarterfinals. Fontes has 13 goals for U-17 national team

Pearl City’s Sunshine Fontes scored two goals for the U.S. U-17 women’s national team in a 4-1 win over Japan last Friday and then added another goal in a 2-0 victory over Japan on Sunday. The games were among three played by the U.S. against Japan at the team’s training camp in Lakewood Ranch, Fla. The other contest ended in a 0-0 draw last Wednesday. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser released its All-State soccer selections today, marking the 20th consecutive year a newspaper has put out an All-State team dating back to the Honolulu Advertiser’s 1998 squads. The newspapers did not put out all-state teams in 1996-97, robbing Brian Ching of Kamehameha of the honor of being player of the year, but the Advertiser did publish teams from 1994-1995.
