Kamehameha claims ILH girls soccer title in shootout

By Nick Abramo on January 22, 2019

When a professional golfer has an unspectacular day, with mostly pars, maybe a birdie or two and a bogey or two, writers can be quick to call it a “ho-hum” round. Those words are perfect for Tuesday’s ILH girls soccer championship match. Kamehameha won the title after a scoreless regulation and overtime by outshooting ‘Iolani 2-1 on penalty kicks. Even the PKs were lackluster. Of nine shots, only three went in the goal. Three were saved and three went wide. […]

Resurgent Aiea tips Pearl City for OIA crown

By Nick Abramo on January 19, 2019

Aiea ran an almost unthinkable gauntlet to hoist the OIA girls soccer championship trophy. Na Alii (12-2) finished their run to the title Saturday night with a 1-0 upset of Pearl City at Kaiser Stadium. It was the fourth straight win in the tournament for Aiea, which had dispatched Kahuku and Kaiser before going into the semifinals Thursday as a decided underdog against 17-time league champion Mililani and coming away with a 1-0 win. Team defense got it done that […]

By Nick Abramo on January 19, 2019

Waianae was charging hard for the victory, but didn’t have quite enough for a first-ever OIA Division II girls soccer championship. Instead, Kalaheo took the crown for the third time in the last six seasons with a 2-1 victory over the Seariders on Saturday night at Kaiser Stadium. Now, the Mustangs (4-7) will try to do something they’ve never done before — win a state D-II championship. “It’s unbelieveable that we’ve come this far and are going into states,” said […]

By Nick Abramo on January 17, 2019

Fontes hurt her knee while scoring a goal in the first half of the Chargers’ 3-2 (3-0 PKs) OIA girls soccer semifinal victory over Moanalua iat Kaiser Stadium on Thursday night. Coach Frank Baumholtz III thinks Fontes may have injured her medial collateral ligament, and if that’s the case, the outlook is not good for her returning to action as the season heads to a close. “I […]

Aiea shocks three-time defending OIA champion Mililani in semis

By Nick Abramo on January 17, 2019

Aiea denied Mililani in its bid for a fourth straight OIA girls soccer championship Thursday night. By playing tenacious team defense, Na Alii survived for a 1-0 victory at Kaiser Stadium. The victory was aided by the wind, which helped slow down the Trojans’ potent attack. Now, Aiea (11-2) will go for its third OIA championship on Saturday at Kaiser High against Pearl City. Na Alii previously took league crowns in 1999 and 2005, under then coach Gordon Matsuoka. “They […]

‘Iolani draws even with Kamehameha in ILH girls soccer

By Nick Abramo on January 5, 2019

Winning two games in a row against your rival in ILH girls soccer is mighty difficult, so that’s why ‘Iolani’s 1-0 victory over Kamehameha on Friday at Kunuiakea Stadium is not a surprise. On Dec. 5 in the first matchup between the two teams, the Warriors escaped with a 1-0 win over the defending state champion Raiders. Now, both are at 6-1 and continue the fight for the first-round championship and a state tournament berth that goes with it. The […]
