By Paul Honda on May 12, 2021

For three years, Keanu Wallace bided his time as a backup wide receiver. It was not unexpected. He sat behind some of the top players in the state, and when he was preparing for senior year, a global pandemic happened. It wiped out his junior season of track, where he is the top sprinter in the 100- and 200-meter events. It wiped out his football season as a senior, reducing his opportunities to a preferred walk-on opportunity at Washington. With […]

High school football has largely been frozen in the sultry confines of on-campus fields across Hawaii. In the midst of a global pandemic, it took the cancellation of prep football to open the door for actual competition: a school team and a club team. Saint Louis, which set a precedent during the winter by playing 13 exhibition basketball games, became the first school to play a football scrimmage in the 2020-21 academic year. The Crusaders scrimmaged the Mill Vill Trojans […]

Punahou, Kamehameha turn down chance to play at Aloha Stadium, TV coverage

By Paul Honda on April 8, 2021

For safety’s sake, Wendell Look wanted to see exhibition football games between private schools played at Aloha Stadium. Following a cancelled football year in Hawaii, it would have been nostalgic. Memorable. Epic, maybe. Instead, the ‘Iolani co-Athletic Director saw his intricately assembled plan come to a halt. Of all the plans laid out by the ILH’s football coordinator since last summer, this one wasn’t dependent on entities outside the private-school league. It wasn’t even at the mercy of the league, […]
