Now, his nephew is doing big things in high school for Roosevelt. Aalona Monteilh, whose father Anthony is Keao’s brother, was a defensive presence in Roosevelt’s 28-7 victory over Waialua at the Bulldogs’ Toshiyuki Nakasone Field on Friday night. Sky Ogata tops 400 yards passing in new-look Roosevelt offense

By Kyle Sakamoto on August 10, 2019

Logic would tell you, Roosevelt should keep everything the same after winning the OIA Division II title last year. That’s not the case this season as the Rough Riders switched their offense from the split-back veer to the run-and-shoot. If Friday’s 42-6 victory over visiting McKinley is any indication, it appears Roosevelt’s offense is just as potent either way. Sky Ogata, who took every snap in the shotgun, completed 27 of 35 passes for 401 yards and three touchdowns against […]

22nd IN A SERIES This summer, head coaches from all 28 Oahu high school varsity football teams are being asked to recount their football playing days. One coach interviewed for this multi-part series pointed out what he thinks may be the value of this endeavor: “A lot of times, you only hear about coaches when they’re getting released or are having a special season. It’s super hard to have a special season, so this should shed more light on them […]

CLOSING THE BOOK: Roosevelt Rough Riders

By Jerry Campany on November 23, 2018

The Roosevelt Rough Riders turned back the clock and put together its best team Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium has ever hosted. The field was home to a winning Roosevelt team for the first time since it was named after the legendary ILH coach in 2007. Kui Kahooilihala earned his 18th career win and will never match the 91 put up by Vasconcellos at the school but he can rest easy knowing that he put up a season that rivals any other. […]

Ogata, Roosevelt ride rough end to stellar season

By Brian McInnis on November 17, 2018

LAHAINA >> Sky Ogata believes wholeheartedly that Roosevelt will be back. Not back to Lahainaluna, necessarily, but back, in general. The Rough Riders’ shifty dual threat quarterback took the best shots a tough, disciplined Lahainaluna defense could dish out, and came back for more in a 48-10 season-ending loss for the OIA champions in the Division II semifinals of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships on Saturday evening. He’ll be back for more next season as a senior. “We’re […]
