Punahou’s Kahanu Kia and the voyage to Notre Dame

By Paul Honda on December 17, 2020

In late July, Kahanu Kia and his father, Nate, made the voyage of a lifetime. After playing in the PTP National College Showcase in Utah, they journeyed across the continent and visited campuses. The Punahou senior didn’t make it to all 15 universities that offered him football scholarships. But he and his dad made sure Notre Dame was on the itinerary. On Wednesday, the 6-foot-2, 210-pound linebacker became the latest island football product to join the Fighting Irish, signing his […]

Early Christmas for Christopher Paige, who commits to Princeton

By Paul Honda on December 17, 2020

The doors of Princeton University opened for Christopher Paige on a sunny day in Hawaii. It one took him days to charge through. The Punahou senior committed to the Tigers football program on Thursday, nine days after being recruited by the Ivy League institution. “I’m super excited to play for a great team and attend a great school. I couldn’t be happier,” the 6-foot-2, 185-pound wide receiver said. Paige turned down offers and opportunities from seven other programs: Air Force, […]

Kamehameha lineman Kuao Peihopa joins Washington’s tough defense

By Paul Honda on December 16, 2020

The Washington Huskies don’t throw a large net when they scour the islands for talent. Recruiter Ikaika Malloe is picky. Landing Kamehameha defensive tackle Kuao Peihopa could fortify a defensive unit that is already talented — and sparked by local talent. Peihopa, a 6-foot-3, 310-pound two-way lineman, will bring a 3.4 grade-point average to the Huskies. He will graduate early from Kamehameha and will arrive in Seattle after the Polynesian Bowl in mid-January. “It’s the University of Hawaii at Seattle […]

On Wednesday morning, the Kamehameha senior made it official and signed a letter of intent to play football for the Orange. “I feel happy and relieved that everything is done and I can just focus on Syracuse and playing football,” said Kauhi, who was initially recruited by assistant coach Blair Cavanaugh, son of Syracuse offensive line coach — and former Hawaii assistant — Mike Cavanaugh. They can expect a bit of a […]

By Paul Honda on December 16, 2020

At the home of Cameron Friel in Windward Oahu, the roosters seemed to be crowing about him before sunrise on Wednesday morning. The Kailua quarterback was up early to sign his letter of intent to play for UNLV. Punahou defensive back Kilinahe Mendiola-Jensen and Friel joined forces for an Instagram Live feed, signing their respective letters to play for the Rebels. College coaches can receive official LOIs by noon, Eastern Time. Normally, a signing event comes with an LOI day. […]

Punahou WR Christopher Paige adds Princeton to his list

By Paul Honda on December 11, 2020

Christopher Paige loves math and science. An AP Computer Science class at Punahou is one of his favorite things in life. Princeton noticed this. The Tigers also noticed Paige’s skill and speed on the gridiron and offered him a roster spot on Tuesday. Princeton and all Ivy League football programs do not offer athletic scholarships, but the financial package for athletes works out well. “It’s a great school. They have a great computer science program. I think they’ve been ranked […]

By Paul Honda on October 29, 2020

Aiva Arquette is set on the future, thanks in part to a St. Louis Cardinals legend. The Saint Louis junior shortstop committed to Cal Poly, ending the recruiting war for one of the state’s most promising prospects. “It feels awesome to commit. I am extremely grateful for the opportunity especially during this time. I enjoyed the process, but it was stressful. It feels good to know where I am going to college for the next four years,” Arquette said. “My parents feel grateful […]
