Suguturaga will go on mission before Utah

By Paul Honda on February 6, 2017

Punahou all-state defensive end Miki Suguturaga will be rushing pass rushers for Utah someday. Some year. The senior confirmed on Monday that he will be on a two-year church mission before he enrolls at Utah. He signed a letter of intent to Utah on Wednesday during a signing event at the Sheraton Waikiki. Utah later removed him from a list of signees on its site, as well as its Twitter page, but it’s all just a formality. Soon enough, he’ll […]

Hawaii girls soccer players get noticed

By Jerry Campany on February 1, 2017

For all of the attention football gets, Hawaii talent in girls soccer had an even better day. Local girls had 34 players, many of them taking a break from this week’s state tournament, commit to colleges on Wednesday morning at the Sheraton Waikiki. The biggest names were Iolani’s Kylee Kim-Bustillos going to Sacramento State, True Dydasco of Punahou pledging to Oregon, Alyssa Yoshida of Kapolei going to Colorado State, Jordan Hill of Aiea signing with Azusa Pacific and Hawaii landing […]

Kamehameha’s Pauole picks Air Force over friend

By Billy Hull on February 1, 2017

Before he was offered late in the recruiting process by Fresno State, Kamehameha defensive lineman Nakoa Pauole was in the same situation his best friend, Alema Kapoi, was in last year. Kapoi, who started next to Pauole on the defensive line for Kamehameha in 2015, was offered by three service academies and eventually decided to enroll at Navy. A year later, Pauole had the same three offers to choose from before Fresno State came in and made a late offer. […]

Waianae’s Lutu-Clarke at ease with decision

By Christian Shimabuku on February 1, 2017

Waianae’s Onesimus Lutu-Clarke is setting out to make the very most of his collegiate experience. The first step toward that was signing with Oregon State on Wednesday morning to make his commitment official. He chose the Beavers because of the environment within and beyond the locker room. “It had to be the family-oriented atmosphere that they had there,” Lutu-Clarke said. “I realized how strong of a bond they had with each other and how coach (Gary) Andersen plans to use […]

Kailua’s Mejia took laid-back approach to WSU

By Christian Shimabuku on February 1, 2017

Social media has been an integral part of an athlete’s college recruitment for some time now, but Kailua senior and Washington State commit Christian Mejia took a more old-fashioned approach by avoiding it altogether. “I’m quiet about that. I’m not a social media guy, I’m just laid back,” he said after making his commitment to WSU official. “Just me and my family kind.” After offers from Vanderbilt, Hawaii and Washington State, Mejia was down to the Rainbow Warriors and Cougars. […]

Punahou’s Suguturaga woke up still undecided

By Christian Shimabuku on February 1, 2017

For a brief moment, it seemed that Punahou’s Miki Suguturaga was about to pull a shocker. Before the National Letter of Intent Signing Day festivities at the Sheraton Waikiki, each athlete who was present had a name card with their respective college choices. Suguturaga’s card had a University of Hawaii logo in the center of it, but it proved too good to be true for fans of the Rainbow Warriors. The senior defensive lineman instead opted for the more probable […]

Faith, Te’o lead Tagovailoa-Amosa to South Bend

By Christian Shimabuku on February 1, 2017

Hundreds filed out of the Sheraton Waikiki ballroom in a frenzy as athletes, family members and coaches readied to celebrate new beginnings. Kapolei senior Myron Tagovailoa-Amosa was one of the few to stay. The newly-minted Notre Dame signee relished his surroundings. After numerous leis and photo requests, he met with uncle and former Campbell coach Amosa Amosa for a tearful embrace. “It really is emotional. I’m definitely grateful and extremely blessed to have this opportunity presented to me,” Tagovailoa-Amosa said. […]
