Kalani chalks up invigorating win in Washington

By Nick Abramo on September 9, 2017

Kalani will head into the stretch run on a high note after its 19-9 victory over Mount Tahoma in Tacoma, Wash., on Friday. The Falcons (3-2, 2-2 Oahu Interscholastic Association Division II) are fighting for a playoff spot and are still in the chase for the title in what is always a rough-and-tumble league. As with most teams traveling to the mainland and getting a victory, it’s a win-win for Kalani. The team toured five colleges during the week — […]

Radford tours D-III schools in Oregon before game

By Nick Abramo on August 31, 2017

Radford is one of three Hawaii high school football teams playing games on the mainland this week, and the Rams are getting a look at college life in Oregon. Coach Lon Passos and the Rams visited George Fox University (Newberg, Ore.) on Wednesday and were planning to explore Linfield College (Mcinnville, Ore.) and Pacific University (Grove, Ore.) today. On Friday, they’ll tour Lewis & Clark College in Portland before playing a game against the Centennial (Gresham, Ore.) Eagles (0-0) on […]

Radford’s Garrison makes (hoops) coach proud

By Nick Abramo on August 26, 2017

The basketball coach in the press box watching the football game couldn’t contain himself. You see, coaches aren’t all about winning and nothing else. They also love to see their student-athletes spread their wings. So, when Radford hoops coach Travis Armstrong saw one of his players, Robert Garrison, enter Friday’s football game against Aiea, he told his colleagues right away: “There he is. No. 35. The big guy.” At that point, Garrison was lined up as a defensive end. Later […]

OIA rivals Aiea and Radford are in ‘same league’

By Nick Abramo on August 26, 2017

The two schools are 2.5 miles apart and show quite similar numbers on the Hawaii high school football Richter scale. In other words, Aiea and Radford are in the same league — literally and figuratively. Yes, they play against each other in the Oahu Interscholastic Association, but they are also comparable in the size and scope of their football programs. Yet another way to put it: They belong on the same field and should probably be in the middle tier […]

Injury forces Castle’s Smith to step in at QB

By Kyle Sakamoto on August 13, 2017

Castle’s Makana Smith proved Saturday that he’s not your typical backup quarterback. Smith came off the bench to complete 6-of-12 passes for 179 yards and two touchdowns and also rushed for a score as Castle beat host Radford 33-28 in an OIA Division I game. Smith, a senior, entered midway through the first quarter after starter Jaylen Uyemura-Lee left the game after being sacked. Smith started the game at wide receiver. Smith completed 35 passes for 333 yards last season, […]
