Photos provided by the Kalani basketball team, which went 1-3 in the Dick’s Sporting Goods Orange Holiday Classic in San Diego, Calif. The Falcons were on the mainland for the first time in recent memory after a busy offseason of fundraising by the team and coaching staff. Coach Nathan Davis’ team posted a win over Orange on Friday. Among their pit stops was Qualcomm Stadium on Sunday to see the Chiefs-Chargers game. Guard Cory Mitchell was named to the all-tournament […]

Punahou wins title in California

By Paul Honda on December 31, 2013

The Punahou Buffanblu defeated Poway 59-52 on Monday to capture the Under Armour Holiday Classic Governor’s Division championship. Punahou won four games in five days, getting a boost from fellow islanders in the title matchup. “Hilo helped us so much,” assistant coach Robert Shklov said, referring to the Hilo High squad that played in the same tourney, different division. “They cheered so hard for us. The boys really appreciated it. We have to send them a care package,” Shklov said. […]

Govs in Mokuleia: A final visit

By Paul Honda on November 5, 2013

The Ortiz ohana requested that the Farrington Governors football team come to Mokuleia one last time, so coach Randall Okimoto and his squad made the trek on Tuesday. The Govs had been to the beach where Dayne Ortiz suddenly disappeared, lost in the sea. They were there on Sunday and Monday as search crews worked valiantly. On Monday night, they honored their teammate with a vigil on campus. The return to Mokuleia on Tuesday began with a light practice on […]

A vigil for Dayne

By Paul Honda on November 5, 2013

The vigil for Dayne Ortiz at Farrington High School on Monday night drew about 1,000. Our staff at the Star-Advertiser covered it. Here is a photo gallery by photographer Bruce Asato. Above are photos generously provided by the Farrington community. This afternoon, the team headed back to Mokuleia for a light practice. After that, at the Ortiz ohana’s request, the team will be at the beach where Dayne disappeared, coach Randall Okimoto said. Below, artwork on sneakers by Dylan Tagoilelagi.

Photo Tour: Waianae

By Paul Honda on October 13, 2013

I hadn’t been back to Waianae since last year, so this was a treat. If not for a busy Saturday, I would’ve tried out that restaurant on the main road that Eli Kapu always raves about. But they close after lunch. Instead, I got there before kickoff and shot game video from ground level. That’s sometimes more intense and entertaining, especially when run-first teams are involved. Castle showed a lot of mettle and actually kept the Seariders ground game under […]

Volleyball Tour: Seabury Hall

By Paul Honda on August 18, 2013

They have one of the smallest enrollments in the state, in a relatively remote area on an island where competitive volleyball is not quite the norm. Yet, the Seabury Hall Spartans find a way to compete every year. This year’s team had just one senior on a roster of eight players at the Ann Kang Invitational, but they still placed fifth in the Silver bracket after a win over Kalani on Saturday. As of last week, the Spartans, of Olinda, […]

Football Tour: Waianae

By Paul Honda on August 18, 2013

Photos courtesy of Eli Kapu. A year removed from key departures, including the graduation of defensive cornerstone Kennedy Tulimasealii, it would be easy to doubt Waianae’s defensive prowess. But coach Danny Matsumoto and his staff always seem to get the most out of the defensive unit, and so many times, in so many places, a unit comes back even stronger without a superstar. Time will tell at Torii Field.

Football Tour: Pac-Five

By Paul Honda on August 14, 2013

Tour stop: Friday, Aug. 9, 2013 They’ve got fairly good numbers, just not a lot of experience. And that goes right to the focal point of the offense at Pac-Five, where Anthony Canencia is at the controls. Canencia is a gifted point guard who plays for University High. In fact, because of his track record — broken collarbone as a freshman, broke the other collarbone as a sophomore — Junior Rainbows basketball coach Walt Quitan is a bit nervous about […]
