Ineligibilities cause downgrade in FB contests

By Nick Abramo on July 27, 2015

In the short term, there’s problems. Long range, things will be OK for the Waipahu and Pearl City football programs. Due to players who have been deemed academically ineligible, two upcoming nonleague football games have been downgraded to scrimmages — Pearl City at Castle, and Waipahu at Kailua. Both contests, which would not have been included in the league standings if played, were originally scheduled for Aug. 7. Instead, Pearl City will visit Castle for a 9 a.m. scrimmage on […]

Pearl City determined to stay gripped near top

By Nick Abramo on June 6, 2015

EIGHTH IN A SERIES ON SPRING FOOTBALL PRACTICES ON OAHU Two seasons ago, in Robin Kami’s first game as the Pearl City football head coach, the Chargers got rolled 42-7 by Kapolei. It was a bleak beginning, but things worked out and Pearl City eventually finished second in the OIA Division II tournament. Beginner’s luck? No. Kami proved his positive impact on the Chargers’ program again in 2014, when his team nearly won the league D-II crown but lost a […]

Pearl City to get Fieldturf, new track next year

By Nick Abramo on June 4, 2015

During spring football practice on Thursday, the Pearl City Chargers’ offense was on one sunburned field and the defense was on another. Both of those fields were adjacent to the main football field at the school’s stadium, the one with beautiful green grass growing. Head coach Robin Kami said they use the main field for some drills but don’t want to overuse it and tear it up this summer before football season in the fall. Kami won’t have to worry […]

Kapaa and Pearl City square off Saturday

By Nick Abramo on November 4, 2014

There are only three teams in Kauai Interscholastic Federation football, and they usually hammer away on each other three times per season. Sure, there have been KIF teams that have gone 6-0 before, but it’s been a long time since a team ran through the league as dominant as Kapaa did this season. The Warriors (6-1 overall) allowed just 22 points in the six league games — an astounding average of 3.7 points per game, or, in other words, a […]

Road to Titletown: Brawn and big brains

By Paul Honda on November 2, 2014

It’s been a weekend (or two) chock full of prep football. Doubleheaders are nice, but great twinbills are unbeatable. The OIA title games at Aloha Stadium on Friday began, for players, coaches, bus drivers, fans and media dweebs (myself included) with the awesomeness of being stuck in rainy pre-Halloween traffic. I was stuck for almost 2 hours getting from Kakaako to the stadium, but I should count my blessings. Billy “Bonecrusher” Hull was trapped among the four-wheeled sardine cans for […]

First quarter The 5:30 p.m. kickoff has been delayed for various reasons. It’s 5:41 and now here we go. Nanakuli’s community is here in FULL FORCE. Right on, Golden Hawks. Pooch kick by NAN on the opening kickoff and nobody for PC calls fair catch. They luck out and recover the bouncing ball. PC ball at its 44. PC series 1: First play from scrimmage, Jordan Taamu’s deep post pass is picked off by safety Randon Kahili-Frantela on a dive. […]
