GLORY DAYS: Coach Kip Botelho and the 2019 Pac-Five Wolfpack

By Nick Abramo on July 28, 2019

25th IN A SERIES This summer, head coaches from all 28 Oahu high school varsity football teams are being asked to recount their football playing days. One coach interviewed for this multi-part series pointed out what he thinks may be the value of this endeavor: “A lot of times, you only hear about coaches when they’re getting released or are having a special season. It’s super hard to have a special season, so this should shed more light on them […]

Pac-Five not sure of 2019 state football classification

By Nick Abramo on March 22, 2019

As it stands right now, Pac-Five is a Division II football team. The Wolfpack will be playing a D-II schedule in the OIA-ILH alliance this fall, just like last year. But their postseason status is in a void at the moment. There is an HHSAA football rule that states a league must have at least two teams in order to get one berth in the postseason. With St. Francis, another D-II classified school, closing at the end of this school […]

Pac-Five takes away a lot from state tourney experience

By Nick Abramo on November 10, 2018

Pac-Five’s season is over — for the second time. The Wolfpack thought the end came a few weeks ago and so they put the pads away. Thanks to rival St. Francis using an ineligible player and getting disqualified, the team had new life. It was back to the practice field to get ready for a first appearance at the state tournament. They put on a good show Saturday night, trailing by only a touchdown late in the fourth quarter before […]

Q&A: Kip Botelho on Pac-Five’s golden opportunity

By Paul Honda on November 8, 2018

There were many years over the span of Kip Botelho’s career as a head coach when Pac-Five showed again and again that competition with the OIA’s mid-level teams was very good. Some preseasons, Pac-Five went 2-2 against some good public-school programs. Once in awhile, the Wolfpack went 2-1 or 3-1. Then, ILH play would begin, and it was a mighty mismatclh against deeper, bigger programs that, in today’s era, are in Open Division. This year, Pac-Five is 4-4, had a […]

31 years later, Pac-Five QB Padello wishes team best

By Paul Honda on November 8, 2018

The last time Pac-Five played in the postseason, it was 1987. Nov. 27, to be exact. The runners-up of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu and Oahu Interscholastic Association met at Aloha Stadium in a preliminary battle before the Oahu Prep Bowl. Led by quarterback Kimo Padello, Pac-Five stunned Kailua 37-14. If the name sounds familiar, he is the father of Hawaii defensive ends Kaimana and KK Padello. Kimo Padello is a busy man with a busy family. Mention Nov. 27 […]

Pac-Five in states for its biggest game since ’85

By Nick Abramo on October 30, 2018

Pac-Five is in the state tournament for the first time and playing its most meaningful postseason game since the program’s second Oahu Prep Bowl championship in 1985. Last week, the Wolfpack (4-4) went through some conditioning and are in pads this week. They thought their season was done after a 14-6 regular-season victory over Waialua at the Aiea High field on Oct. 12, but catapulted into the Division II state tournament when St. Francis was removed last week for having […]
