By Paul Honda on September 30, 2014

A golden moment: Nanakuli is clutch

By Paul Honda on September 27, 2014

It may surprise some fans, but there are people on Oahu who never really want to see a great Division-II football game. Sometimes it’s just the label that turns them off. Other times, it’s just circumstance. Out of sight, out of mind. Nanakuli and Pearl City on Friday night — instant classic. The Golden Hawks rallied from 14 points down for a 28-21 win, scoring the go-ahead touchdown with less than 3 minutes left. Still, Pearl City had a nice […]

By Paul Honda on September 26, 2014

First quarter The visiting Chargers strike for touchdowns on their first two possessions. The first drive is mostly handoff left and right to Dominic Maneafaiga, but after all his heavy lifting, Jordan Taamu found Garrett Kanamu in the corner of the end zone for a 14-yard touchdown. PC 7, NAN 0, 7:08. Nanakuli got flagged on its first three plays from scrimmage and punted. Pearl City drove 66 yards in 10 plays, scoring on a 12-yard TD pass from Taamu […]

Composure is the key for Nanakuli, Watson says

By Nick Abramo on September 8, 2014

Record-wise, the Nanakuli football team is doing quite well and looking like strong contenders for a league championship and a state-tournament berth. Not so fast. Nanakuli coach Keala Watson said he doesn’t look at the positives nearly as much as he does the negatives. And, the oft-smiling, soft-spoken Watson is no negative Nelly. The former University of Hawaii defensive lineman is concerned that when the schedule gets tougher, the type of errors the team is making now will keep them […]

Nanakuli’s Tuiloma heading for the hills (update)

By Nick Abramo on August 27, 2014

Nanakuli senior two-way lineman Lyle Tuiloma said Wednesday night that he gave his oral commitment to Colorado on Tuesday. Tuiloma is projected to work on the defensive side of the ball for coach Mike MacIntyre’s Buffaloes next season. He is a solid 6 feet 3 and 285 pounds and he’s playing left offensive tackle and defensive tackle for the Golden Hawks. “This was a big decision for me,” said Tuiloma, a two-year starter who added that he’ll stick with his […]

Golden Hawks still in hunt

By Brian McInnis on September 27, 2013

As of this moment, the Oahu Interscholastic Association White Division playoff picture is in pretty sharp focus. There’s still time for things to get seriously blurry, however. Kaiser (5-0), Radford (5-1), Pearl City (4-1) and Kalani (4-2) have the White’s four postseason berths if things ended today. Should Pearl City (at Nanakuli), Kaiser (vs. Roosevelt) and Kalani (vs. Anuenue) all win this weekend, that would solidify the situation further. Radford has a bye. But Nanakuli (2-3) and Kalaheo (2-3) might […]

Pupule’s ballot: Still 1a and 1b

By Paul Honda on September 13, 2013

This may seem manic or chaotic or just wishy-washy, but here goes. I voted Kamehameha No. 1 on my ballot for the Star-Advertiser Prep Football Top 10 this week. Yet, I expect Punahou to win on a last-minute field goal against the Warriors tonight. Say whuhhh… It’s like this. The Warriors, my opinion, have proven to be worth of the top spot by virtue of five wins, almost all against elite competition. Punahou deserves the spot, too, but until we […]

Football Tour: Kailua, Nanakuli, Aiea, Roosevelt

By Paul Honda on August 3, 2013

Tour stop: Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013 It’s that time of year again. Or as Nanakuli football coach Keala Watson dubs it, “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year.” Prep football media/fiends/fanatics relish this early season stretch. We get to travel a bit around the island, see old faces and new. It started a week ago with Leilehua and resumes each day. Today, six schools are slated for photographs, but I will only get to see three because of time conflicts. […]
