R&S Lab: Kapolei 2015-16 vs. Moanalua 2018

By Paul Honda on October 11, 2018

COMMENTARY BY PAUL HONDA This isn’t a post about June Jones. It isn’t about Taulia Tagovailoa. OK, maybe this is, but it’s also about a one-dimensional offense. A quarterback who is probably a world-class dart champion. And his catchers of spirals. His many catchers of spiraling pigskins. But first, June Jones. In 2016, the former head coach at Hawaii, a guru of the run-and-shoot offense who once could have easily won the election to become governor of Hawaii (my opinion) […]

VIDEO: No. 8 Moanalua vs. Waipahu

By Paul Honda on October 6, 2018

Moanalua improved to 7-0 (6-0 OIA Division I) with a 29-5 win over Waipahu at Aloha Stadium on Friday night. Na Menehune got 353 yards and four TD passes from senior Nick Au while their defense stonewalled Waipahu’s offense. The Marauders (5-4, 4-2) missed RB Alfred Failauga (root canal).

Moanalua happy with precise passing, tenacious ‘D’

By Paul Honda on October 5, 2018

The textbook for Moanalua football in 2018 remains the same. All Nick Au and his Na Menehune teammates want is to perfect their creation. Au passed for 353 yards and four touchdowns, completing 32 of his 42 attempts, as No. 8 Moanalua coasted past Waipahu 29-5 on a humid Friday night at Aloha Stadium. Au’s yardage total on Friday ranks ninth in school history. His single-game high came nearly two months ago, a 375-yard performance against Castle. The precision of […]

Q&A: Moanalua coach Savaii Eselu on Waipahu

By Paul Honda on October 4, 2018

Savaii Eselu has a useful imagination. It’s part of the reason why Moanalua has embraced what it is. Lots of shifty pass catchers? Take the four-wide to the next level. The Moanalua head coach is also a bit wary of what his counterpart, Waipahu head coach Bryson Carvalho, might scheme when the two teams battle tonight in OIA D-I play at Aloha Stadium. Moanalua is unbeaten (6-0, 5-0) and ranked No. 8 in the Star-Advertiser Football Top 10. Waipahu (5-3, […]

Moanalua’s Paleafei is incognito no more

By Nick Abramo on October 1, 2018

Moanalua senior Natasha Paleafei made sure her hair was under her helmet so as to not give her away. But that effort to blend in isn’t going work any more. Her cover is blown. Paleafei is the starting right guard for No. 8 Moanalua, and the fact that she’s a girl is the only thing that is not quite blending. Ability-wise, she is right there on par with her offensive linemates, according to Na Menehune coach Savaii Eselu. Paleafei, a […]

No. 8 Moanalua closes in on top seed in OIA D-I

By Jeremy Nitta on September 29, 2018

As No. 8 Moanalua Na Menehune barrels toward the playoffs boasting a 6-0 record and the current top spot in Division I, all eyes now turn to the next matchup on their schedule: a duel against Waipahu. The Marauders, coming off a humbling 50-20 loss to Leilehua, now sit tied with the Mules in the loss column for second in Division I. A win over Waipahu on Friday at Aloha Stadium would clinch the Division I crown for Na Menehune. […]
