Moanalua’s Cauley just couldn’t stay away

By Nick Abramo on August 8, 2014

Sometimes, a man’s hankering for football needs to be quenched. And so it was for Jason Cauley, who had just moved to Hawaii four years ago and felt the need to get back into doing what he loves — coaching football. The urge hit him almost immediately after arriving from Mobile, Ala., where he had been an assistant along with his brother, Rick Cauley, at Murphy High School. And then, bam, things happened fast, really fast, for the man who […]

Kahuku unveils new look under Leslie

By Paul Honda on August 1, 2014

Down the freeway at Moanalua, the Kahuku Red Raiders happy to get some contact against another team for the first time this summer. New coach Lee Leslie made his debut, far from happy about the start of the afternoon — only one of the two scheduled buses showed up at Kahuku. Players split up and eventually made it to Moanalua late. The scrimmage, which began hot with a touchdown by each team’s offense, finally began around 5:30 p.m. That was […]

Kaneshiro’s record-setting season ends

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 13, 2013

Moanalua’s season ended with a 54-17 loss to Leilehua on Friday night, also capping a record-breaking senior season for quarterback Micah Kaneshiro. Kaneshiro completed 28 of 46 passes for 295 yards and two touchdowns in his final game for Na Menehune. Pressed into duty early in his junior year, the 5-foot-7, 170-pounder finished his senior year with 2,719 yards and 25 touchdowns against six interceptions. “I just told him I appreciate him and how much he’s grown so much from […]

Video: Castle at Moanalua

By Paul Honda on October 1, 2013

Part 1 Part 2 I admit, I didn’t expect Moanalua to run much, but Castle went all in to stop the pass. Na Menehune ran their share of dive/draw plays for awhile before Micah Kaneshiro let that pigskin fly with regularity. Castle’s still in a fight for a playoff berth. Moanalua? On a good night, they can scare anybody. A receiving corps like that, plus Kaneshiro’s arm, is a rare treat for most programs.

Update: Moanalua 39, Castle 14, final

By Paul Honda on September 27, 2013

6:55 p.m. Picture-perfect weather here at Moanalua. Slight breezes, no ominous clouds. Just clear, crystalline blue sky above and a short wait until Castle and Moanalua begin their varsity game. The JV game is in the fourth quarter with Moanalua ahead 21-0. Castle has a hearty squad of 25 players. The varsity game could take some time since both teams love the four-wide passing game. I say it’s a 3-hour, 10-minute contest. After all, Moanalua’s Micah Kaneshiro tossed the ball […]
