VIDEO: HHSAA presser: Ane, York

By Paul Honda on November 18, 2014

These press conferences are great for media in one sense: everybody gets a chance to talk to the high school coach of their choice. Of course, we’re talking coaches of teams that have made it this far. The first presser comes before the opening round of the state tourney. That’s borderline madhouse since there are six teams in Division I and six teams in D-II, and tracking down all 12 coaches is nearly impossible in a limited amount of time. […]

By Paul Honda on November 18, 2014

(Here’s the longer version of this morning’s feature Star-Advertiser story on Rex Manu.) For some time now, he’s been the Answer Man. Rex Manu gets to the classroom after school while other kids are gallivanting their way off campus to Jamba Juice or Burger King. He sits in Rod York’s classroom, waiting. Waiting. Soon enough, his Mililani teammates show up, books and backpacks in hand. Manu is a 6-foot-2, 290-pound defensive tackle, offensive lineman, playmaker, standout force of nature on […]

By Billy Hull on November 15, 2014

Farrington senior Breiden Fehoko has already taken care of his college commitment. The Governors defensive lineman is headed to Texas Tech and is set to enroll in January, leaving him settled on his future with no worries. The only thing on Fehoko’s mind now is figuring out how this Governors defense can slow down Mililani in the semifinals of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships at Aloha Stadium. Fehoko and his boys on the defense line will need a […]

TRENCH WARFARE: Manu vs. Matagi

By Billy Hull on November 15, 2014

Mililani defensive tackle Rex Manu is one of the top two high school football recruits from Hawaii still uncommitted. Saturday night at Aloha Stadium, he leads the Trojans defense into battle against Farrington in the semifinal of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships. Manu (6-2, 290) was featured in a Trench Warfare episode earlier this season and is back again. The former Stanford commit has opened up his recruiting and is big on Oregon, Washington, Washington State, Colorado and […]

Countdown to kickoff: Farrington vs. Mililani

By Paul Honda on November 14, 2014

A shorter version of this story appears in Saturday’s Star-Advertiser They’re deep enough to challenge their OIA nemesis, but the Farrington Governors would really like to be at full strength. When the 4 p.m. semifinal between fifth-ranked Farrington (9-2) and No. 2-ranked Mililani (11-0) kicks off on Saturday, the Govs may be without senior running back Ranan Mamiya. He suffered a right knee injury in last week’s 22-6 quarterfinal win over Maui. The 5-foot-11, 170-pound playmaker has rushed for 1,203 […]
