LIVE BLOG: Mililani 49, Campbell 21, F

By Paul Honda on August 22, 2015

There’s a faint breeze here at John Kauinana Stadium. In other words, it’s a chilly place to be compared to the rest of the island, where temperatures got a high as 93 degrees (I was at ‘Iolani shooting video earlier) and humidity.. HUMIDITY? Awful today. Mililani beat Campbell in the earlier JV game. Varsity kickoff is set for 7 p.m. FIRST QUARTER The Trojans’ first series is drenched by rain and Vavae Malepeai commits a rare fumble, recovered by Campbell […]

Newspaper photos can be teaching tools

By Nick Abramo on August 17, 2015

Sometimes inspiration comes from places you don’t expect. Take the Farrington football team for instance. The Governors (1-0) had just beaten Waipahu 46-6 in an Oahu Interscholastic Association game Saturday night, and standout running back Challen Faamatau spoke with Hawaii Prep World about this kind of thing. Faamatau had just rushed for 102 yards and added 118 receiving yards. Sure, he was feeling good with his OC-16 player of the game plaque in his hands. But he was all pumped […]

Mililani climbs national ladder to No. 6

By Nick Abramo on August 17, 2015

Mililani moved up one spot to No. 6 in the MaxPreps Freeman Rankings on Sunday after Saturday’s 73-14 victory over McKinley. The defending Division I state champion Trojans (1-0) were in double digits (No. 18) when the season’s first rankings came out on Aug. 8 and went to No. 7 last week. Ned Freeman, a MaxPreps.com associate, made the computer model for the rankings, which, according to the site, are the result of a collection of “enormous amounts of information […]

By Nick Abramo on August 13, 2015

Mililani hasn’t played a regular-season game yet and went from No. 18 to No. 7 in the MaxPreps Freeman Rankings in less than a week. The defending Division I state champion Trojans were in double digits when the rankings came out on Aug. 8 and are in the single digits in the latest release Thursday. Ned Freeman, a MaxPreps.com associate, made the computer model for the rankings, which, according to the site, are the result of a collection of “enormous […]

Cal Lee, Rod York debriefed after scrimmage

By Nick Abramo on August 12, 2015

It was just an initial, relatively insignificant skirmish in what could be the beginning of the road to the real war. We’re talking about Cal Lee’s Saint Louis Crusaders against Rod York’s Mililani Trojans. The battle lines have been drawn, but there is no assurance that either of these two teams will hold up in the long run of very difficult schedules. But — as the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Top 10 media poll voters have told us the last two weeks — Mililani […]

MaxPreps computer rates Mililani No. 18

By Paul Honda on August 10, 2015

Mililani is ranked No. 18 in the CBS MaxPreps National Computer Football Rankings released on Saturday. The Trojans have not played a game yet, but have played in five scrimmages. Four of them were in a game format (timed quarters), with Mililani winning decisively against Leilehua, Kahuku and Saint Louis. They also played Kamehameha and Fagaitua of American Samoa that the visitors won, though Mililani benched its starters in that contest. Mililani opens OIA play on Saturday against McKinley at […]

Milton and the fast, yellow monsters

By Paul Honda on August 10, 2015

Scrimmage, game, duel. Whatever and however we think of Saturday’s matchup between No. 1 Mililani and No. 2 Saint Louis, it was both entertaining and revealing. >> Milton the monster There was a cartoon show long ago (before you kids were born) called “Milton the Monster”. An affable, dorky creature, a nerd in a beast’s strangely drawn body. It was made for the 1970s, an era when artists and writers were (possibly) feeling the aftereffects of those fluid and lucid […]
