Mililani senior running back Vavae Malepeai was chosen Tuesday as the Gatorade Hawaii Football Player of the Year. Malepeai led the state with 1,930 rushing yards and 28 touchdowns on 227 carries in 13 games. He also caught 10 passes for 171 yards and five touchdowns in leading the Trojans to an appearance in the state semifinals and a 10-3 overall record. Mililani senior running back Vavae Malepeai is Hawaii’s new all-time rushing king. The 6-foot, 205-pound University of Oregon commit surpassed Joe Igber‘s 17-year record of 4,428 career rushing yards on a 15-yard run in the third quarter of Friday night’s Division I state semifinal game against Saint Louis.
