Q&A: Mililani football coach Rod York

By Paul Honda on November 10, 2017

Rod York doesn’t ask for precision and teamwork. He demands it. The former ‘Iolani and Hawaii defensive lineman is in his eighth season as head coach at Mililani. Through the ups and downs — mostly ups — York and his staff have been steadfast about learning. For York, the game is in his blood, and the quest for new knowledge never ends. The Trojans will meet top-seeded Saint Louis tonight in the semifinal round of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Open […]

Kahuku guards OIA title with its life

By Nick Abramo on November 5, 2017

Kahuku doesn’t give away football titles easily. The third-ranked Red Raiders came back from a 21-7 deficit by turning the tables on No. 2 Mililani on Saturday night for a 35-31 victory for the OIA Division I championship at Aloha Stadium. Surprised? Not if you are from Kahuku. The Red Raiders got it done to win an OIA title for the 19th time in the last 29 seasons, the 26th time overall and the third season in a row. Mililani […]

York: ‘I need to do a better job’

By Paul Honda on November 5, 2017

It was a weekend of hypnotic, thrilling football. There was mostly tight, down-to-the-wire play in the Division I and D-II state tournaments. But in the Oahu Interscholastic Association D-I championship game, Mililani came so, so close. A 21-7 lead dissipated. A 31-28 lead vanished. Kahuku (10-1) won its third league title in a row with a dramatic 35-31 victory on Saturday night at Aloha Stadium. Rod York, the Trojans’ coach, was stoked by his team’s effort. He was less than […]

GAME NIGHT 11/4: Mililani/Kahuku

By Hawaii Prep World on November 4, 2017

No matter who wins tonight at Aloha Stadium, a streak of 10 straight OIA titles won by either the Red Raiders or Trojans will be intact. This is the first meeting since Kahuku beat Mililani, 20-7, to win the OIA title, a year after the Trojans beat the Red Raiders in the OIA final by the same score. Keep in mind the loser in this game has to turn around and play No. 1 Saint Louis in six days in […]

Q&A: Mililani football coach Rod York

By Paul Honda on November 3, 2017

Rod York leaves no stone unturned. He has traveled near and far in his thirst for knowledge, become a human hard drive of offensive theory and, perhaps most impressively, teaches with as much effectiveness as perhaps any coach in the islands. Whether it’s building a top-shelf staff or developing players from the youth level, York has unbeaten Mililani in position to win the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I football crown. All that stands in the way is behemoth Kahuku. York […]

Mililani’s dominance begins in the trenches

By Nick Abramo on October 21, 2017

We all know how good Kahuku’s offensive line is nearly every year, and the same goes for Mililani. But over in Central Oahu this year, they seem to have found something extra special with this version of the Trojans’ offensive line. The unit owned the line of scrimmage against what is considered a tough Waianae defense on Friday night and it spurred a 42-6 victory in the Oahu Interscholastic Association D-I semifinals and a spot in the title game against […]

Tuivaiave-Olomua powers Mililani into title game

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 20, 2017

Count Jalen Tuivaiave-Olomua among those who didn’t know he’d play an expanded role in the Mililani offense Friday night. Tuivaiave-Olomua led the Trojans ground game with 649 yards and 12 touchdowns while helping lead the defense as a two-way standout last season. But with the emergence of Kilifi Malepeai (347 yards, eight TDs) this season, Tuivaiave-Olomua entered Friday’s game with 97 yards on just 16 carries as a senior while devoting more of his focus to leading the defense from […]
