PREPPING for 2018: Mililani Trojans

By Nick Abramo on August 1, 2018

12TH IN A SERIES Last year, Mililani let it get away. With 1:34 left in the OIA championship game, the Trojans lost their chance at the trophy when Kahuku scored the go-ahead TD for a 35-31 victory. After that, Mililani moved on to the state tournament and lost to Saint Louis, the same team that came back late to wind up with a 31-28 title-game win over Kahuku in the Open Division state championship. So, the Trojans are right there […]

Kapolei, Mililani get work in during shortened scrimmage

By Nick Abramo on July 29, 2018

The good news is Kapolei and Mililani got to play a long, nearly 90-minute first half in a football scrimmage Saturday night. But there was bad news, too. After a 10-minute break, the teams came onto the field for the second half and the referees were gone. According to bystanders, the referees thought the game was over. Darren Hernandez, the Kapolei coach, was not happy about the referees’ disappearance. He wanted to get some work in for his other quarterbacks […]

Mililani to play St. John Bosco in California

By Nick Abramo on March 2, 2018

Mililani will visit St. John Bosco for a football game against the Braves in Bellflower, Calif., on Aug. 31. This will be the third trip in the last four seasons for the Trojans. They defeated Clayton Valley Charter 49-30 in Concord, Calif., last season. In 2015, they visited Liberty in Las Vegas and lost 76-53. Those are the only two times Mililani has played an opponent from the mainland. A year ago, the Trojans went 10-2, losing to Kahuku 35-31 […]

Will Milton follow Frost to Nebraska?

By Nick Abramo on December 2, 2017

There is no evidence that UCF sophomore McKenzie Milton will follow coach Scott Frost to Nebraska, but there is no evidence that he won’t. His father, Mark Milton, was asked the question via cell phone Saturday. “He has a New Year’s Day Bowl game coming up, so that (question) is something he’s not even thinking about,” said Mark Milton, who stayed in Hawaii this weekend for business reasons while others in his family attended the Knights’ 62-55, double-overtime victory over […]

Kahuku, Saint Louis advance to another showdown

By Nick Abramo on November 11, 2017

One player was just trying to circle around and get open. His opponent was trying to defend the run before switching gears to defend the pass. It was during one of two highly entertaining games of state Division I-Open semifinal football Friday night at Aloha Stadium, and the outcome of this one, the opener, was hanging in the balance as another player, Kahuku quarterback Sol-Jay Maiava, scrambled around. Maiava saw receiver Duke Heffernan alone in the middle of the end […]

Mililani’s quest: So close, yet so far

By Paul Honda on November 11, 2017

Last week, it was Kahuku in the Oahu Interscholastic Association title game. This week, it was defending state champion Saint Louis. For a second week in a row, the Mililani Trojans played unsurpassed football. Then, a mighty foe surpassed them. Mililani roared to a 23-10 lead, then saw Saint Louis ratchet up to a new level. The final score of Saint Louis’ 47-23 victory in the semifinals of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Open Division State Championships doesn’t tell the whole […]
