Q&A: Mililani football coach Rod York

By Paul Honda on September 26, 2018

Rod York is as hungry as ever as a coach. York simply loves to build. He and his staff lifted Mililani into a state-championship program (twice). To improve the team’s future, he and his staff started the Mill Vill JPS program for middle-school players. His players arrive at the high school with a grasp of the terminology, fundamentals and expectations. They have a certain level of freedom within the intricate system of the Trojans, but discipline is meted out when […]

VIDEO: Highlights of No. 4 Mililani’s 35-0 win over Waianae

By Paul Honda on September 25, 2018

Here’s a look at the highlights of the Waianae-Mililani game. Waianae’s defense was stellar in the first half, stopping the No. 4 Trojans twice inside the 10-yard line. It was 7-0, Mililani, at the half. Then the Trojan offense went into another gear and quarterback Dillon Gabriel went into record-breaking mode. He completed 18 of 19 attempts at one point and finished with 362 yards and five TDs through the air. That was enough for the senior to surpass Tua […]

Q&A: Mililani’s record-breaking QB, Dillon Gabriel

By Paul Honda on September 25, 2018

The Mililani Trojans are unbeaten in OIA Open Division play, and Dillon Gabriel would be perfectly fine if he hadn’t broken a record along the way. Gabriel is the new all-time career passing yards leader after a 362-yard, five-TD performance against Waianae. His game-day routine is basic and rich with family time. On a warm Saturday morning, the routine of game day begins. Gabriel wakes up around 7 a.m. He goes to church before breakfast. Mom (Dori) makes a spinach […]

Mililani’s Gabriel breaks Tua’s passing record in win

By Paul Honda on September 22, 2018

Well, that’s one less question for the Mililani Trojans to answer. With 362 yards and five touchdowns through the air in a 35-0 win over Waianae on Saturday night, Dillon Gabriel passed two Saint Louis legends, Timmy Chang and Tua Tagovailoa, to become the all-time career leader in passing yardage in Hawaii. Gabriel now has 8,201 yards. Tagovailoa, now the starting quarterback at Alabama, compiled 8,158 yards in his prep career. Chang has 8,001 yards. A sideline pass to Cy […]

Mililani’s Gabriel on verge of state passing record

By Paul Honda on September 22, 2018

Dillon Gabriel means it when he says numbers are just numbers. With kickoff between No. 5 Mililani and Waianae more than nine hours away, the Trojan senior quarterback let the question soak in. What would it mean to you and the program to pass Tua Tagovailoa and become the state’s all-time career passing record holder? Tagovailoa set his record as a senior at Saint Louis two seasons ago. Just 320 yards behind the current starting QB at Alabama, Gabriel has […]

No. 5 Mililani lays the wood on No. 4 Campbell

By Brian McInnis on September 16, 2018

Campbell coach Darren Johnson gave a tongue-in-cheek comparison of fortunes to the University of Hawaii football team as he walked off the field at John Kauinana Stadium. “They bachi’d us. When they win, we win,” Johnson said of the Rainbow Warriors, who fell by a touchdown at Army earlier Saturday in West Point, N.Y. And so it was that No.4 Campbell (4-1, 1-1 OIA Open Division) received a 52-14 beatdown at the hands of an extremely motivated No. 5 Mililani […]

GAME NIGHT 9/15: Campbell/Mililani

By Brian McInnis on September 15, 2018

No. 5 Mililani 52, No. 4 Campbell 14, F ———- 10:12: And that’s that, final. Mililani put on a show. 10:03: I’m heading down to the field. Your final should be 52-14. … Although the clock is stopped at 49 seconds because of an injury to a Mililani player. 9:56: Dillon Gabriel’s night is done, as he gives way to backup RJ Javar. Gabriel with, I believe, 371 yards passing and 4 TDs, plus one more on the ground. 9:49: […]
