Q&A: Rod York’s Trojans rested, ready for Sabers

By Paul Honda on November 15, 2018

At 9-2, the Mililani Trojans are having one of their finest football season ever, but the one prize they have their eyes on isn’t quite in grasp yet. The OIA Open champions need a win over Campbell, the league’s third-place team, to qualify for the championship round in the Open Division. Mililani and Campbell play on Friday, 4:30 p.m., at Aloha Stadium. The Trojans overwhelmed Campbell during the regular season, 52-14, but Coach Rod York and staff don’t lose perspective. […]

Barquis is Mililani’s ‘Mighty’ 5-foot-1 RB (w/video)

By Nick Abramo on November 15, 2018

There are plenty of Mililani football players whose contributions could be described as mighty. But there is only one with who gets to use a capital M … and it’s not the obvious guess — the 6-foot, 250 pound Kilifi Malepeai. We’re talking about senior Dreyston Barquis. He is 5 feet 1 and 140 pounds, and his teammates call him “Mighty” — a reference to the Mighty Mouse cartoon character. Unlike Malepeai, Barquis does not enjoy star status, at least […]

Mililani limits Kahuku to lowest output in OIA since 2014

By Paul Honda on November 3, 2018

The roller coaster doesn’t end for the Kahuku Red Raiders. For Mililani, the blend of experimental laboratory and tough-nosed fundamentals continue well into Coach Rod York’s ninth season. Kahuku’s 27-7 loss to Mililani in the OIA Open championship game on Friday night at Aloha Stadium was, in many ways, a sequel to the first meeting between the teams. In their first matchup, Mililani prevailed 38-10 on Kahuku’s homecoming despite muddy terrain and the home team’s 51-game win streak at Carleton […]

Gabriel’s milestone night ends with a title

By Jason Kaneshiro on November 3, 2018

Dillon Gabriel didn’t think much of his performance on Friday night. Chances are the Mililani quarterback was in the minority in his assessment. Gabriel completed 26 of 39 passes for 375 yards and three touchdowns and the Trojans captured the OIA Open Division championship with a 27-7 victory over three-time defending champion Kahuku on Friday at Aloha Stadium. “I didn’t do my part, but luckily we came out with the win,” Gabriel told the Star-Advertiser’s Nick Abramo after the win. […]

Mililani, Kahuku continue OIA dominance

By Jerry Campany on November 2, 2018

For the 11th consecutive season, and 15th time in the last 16 years, the OIA top-tier football championship will go to either Kahuku or Mililani. If last year’s tussle is any indication, the game might go down to the wire. If it does, it will be a rarity. The big game in the public schools had been largely decided in blowouts since 2010, with the closest margin of victory being 13 twice before last year’s 35-31 Kahuku victory. Before that, […]
