Leilehua smooth in 35-0 dashing of Farrington

By Nick Abramo on August 2, 2019

Leilehua got off to a fine start to the 2019 football season Friday night, dumping Farrington 35-0 at the Govs’ Skippa Diaz Stadium. The nonleague victory doesn’t mean as much as it would if Farrington was at full strength. The home team was missing 19 players, mostly due to academic probation, according to coach Daniel Sanchez. But that doesn’t take away from the fine form the Division I Mules were in, especially for a season opener against a team that […]

GLORY DAYS: Coach Mark Kurisu and the 2019 Leilehua Mules

By Nick Abramo on June 30, 2019

EIGHTH IN A SERIES This summer, head coaches from all 28 Oahu high school varsity football teams are being asked to recount their football playing days. One coach who has already been interviewed for this multi-part series pointed out what he thinks may be the value of this endeavor: “A lot of times, you only hear about coaches when they’re getting released or are having a special season. It’s super hard to have a special season, so this should shed […]

CLOSING THE BOOK: Leilehua Mules

By Jerry Campany on October 24, 2018

The Leilehua Mules revved up their offense and returned to perennial contender status the program has held for so long, winning as many games as it had since Mark Kurisu‘s first go-round as coach in 2011. The Mules have improved on their win total four years in a row for the first time since Nolan Tokuda‘s squads from 2005-2008. Leilehua was held below three touchdowns only three times, all of them losses, but the offense generated the program’s most points […]

Marauders flip the script on Mules

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 20, 2018

Turnovers fueled Leilehua’s second-half surge against Waipahu in their regular-season meeting. When the teams met again — with far higher stakes — on Friday, Waipahu did the taking. The Marauder secondary, living up to the school’s nickname, swiped four interceptions in the second half and Waipahu knocked off No. 9 Leilehua 29-6 in the semifinals of the OIA Division I playoffs. The win sent Waipahu, the division’s third seed, to next week’s championship game against the winner of Saturday’s semifinal […]

The Mules kicker made three first-quarter field goals and had a key punt late in the game as host Leilehua beat Damien 23-17 on Saturday in an OIA-ILH Division I game. “I have a lot of confidence in my O-line — they block for me and I just get the points done with my leg,” Tom-Makue said.
