Canadian team enjoys experience at Leilehua

By Nick Abramo on August 31, 2013

Leilehua football coach Nolan Tokuda got some laughs from coaches and players as he addressed both teams at midfield after the Mules’ 65-6 victory over the visiting Vincent Massey Trojans on Friday night. “Next time, we’ll go up there and play you guys in hockey, right?” Tokuda said. The Trojans (0-1) hail from Winnipeg, Manitoba, and some of the players also play ice hockey, which is considered a national sport in Canada. The two teams ate a pregame meal together before the […]

Update: Leilehua 28, Campbell 21, final

By Paul Honda on August 23, 2013

6:26 p.m. Partly cloudy here in Wahiawa. A perfect evening for prep football. I ran into Leilehua boys basketball coach Patrick Wetzel, who guaranteed me that it’ll rain later. “This is Wahiawa,” he reminded me. “It always rains.” If it rains, shooting video becomes problematic without an umbrella. Blogging becomes near impossible since I’m situated in the bleachers, not the press box. The box here is ancient and small, and every available window is occupied. No matter what, the view […]

Video: #7 Leilehua at #8 ‘Iolani

Leilehua vs. ‘Iolani was a tug of war between superb coaching staffs, and a lot of fun to watch again on video.

Leilehua wins a battle of up-tempo offenses

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 17, 2013

For a while, the tempo in Saturday’s matchup between Leilehua and ‘Iolani rivaled that of the just-completed NCAA Summer League basketball at Manoa Gym. The fast-break styles of both teams produced a combined 91 points and 828 yards of total offense, and ‘Iolani coach Wendell Look summed up Leilehua’s 56-35 season-opening win with an extension of the hoops analogy. “They got a couple breakaways and dunked on our head,” he said. Leilehua scored three touchdowns on plays of more than […]

Update: Leilehua 56, ‘Iolani 35, final

By Paul Honda on August 17, 2013

2:52 p.m. A whirlwind first quarter at Eddie Hamada Field. The visiting Mules took a 7-0 lead on a 4-yard blast by Lecory Wynn, but Austin Jim On’s touchdown pass brought the Raiders back. The tailback, Ikaika Piceno, scored on an option pitch to give the Mules the lead again, but ‘Iolani answered with another touchdown strike by the lefty, Jim On. Max Look picked off a Mack Eberhardt pass and returned it 40-plus yards to the Leilehua 3-yard line […]

Everyone looks good on TV

By Jerry Campany on August 14, 2013

Nothing stays on TV for 25 years without a little star power, and OC 16 has had more than enough to keep it going. The cable station, which began as KBLE-17, will begin its 25th year of broadcasting high school sports on Thursday when Punahou visits Mililani. Nobody knows which names will be remembered 25 years from now, just as nobody knew that one of the most recognizable names from that first game was Aiea’s little quarterback. Current Leilehua coach […]

Oahu’s rivalry week comes early

By Jerry Campany on August 12, 2013

These are your daddy’s preseason games. So often high school coaches approach preseason games the same way NFL coaches do, getting their starters in for a series or two and settling back to watch everyone else get a chance after that. But in the first week of 2013, it seemed everyone was going for the throat. Sure, Mililani used both its quarterbacks when coach Rod York has pledged that he will choose one to be the starter when games start […]
