Sometimes one thing leads to another. When reached Monday night for a report on the team’s canceled practice, Leilehua football coach Nolan Tokuda answered questions about how some of his players and coaches were affected by the mandatory evacuations enforced by firefighters due to the wildfire near Wahiawa. Eventually, the subject changed to football and that’s when Tokuda let us know about one of his players that we would be wise to watch out for. He was talking about 6-foot-4, […]
The smoke from the wildfire near Wahiawa was so bad Monday that the Leilehua football team canceled its practice. Mules head coach Nolan Tokuda said some of his coaches and players had to leave their homes when firefighters enforced a mandatory evacuation of about 100 homes. The evacuation order was eventually lifted Monday night. “We lost a day of preparation,” Tokuda said, “but safety is always first.” Leilehua, which played a scrimmage against Mililani on Thursday, is getting ready for […]

It’s the worst time of year for Nolan Tokuda. Football season is over. The Leilehua coach surely thought his team could make it farther than the OIA quarterfinals, but that is not the main reason why he is dismayed. “All that time we spent together, the players and the coaches … we won’t be seeing them again, and I’ll especially miss the seniors,” he said moments after Campbell came to Wahiawa and knocked the Mules out of the OIA D-I […]
There were some highly entertaining, eye-opening regular-season finales in OIA Division I football last weekend, giving fans one last look before the playoffs start Friday. Kahuku proved it does indeed have a workable passing attack and it made all the difference in a 28-15 win over Waianae. Farrington followed with a 29-27 win over Campbell. Senior quarterback Tuli Wily-Matagi, who went through some early season struggles, looked poised in leading the offense that desperately needed a good showing after two […]
Fourth down and a piece of grass. That’s how close Leilehua was to a first down. With about three minutes left in the third quarter and with the ball at the Kahuku 6-yard-line on Friday, Mules quarterback Kalanimoku Pauole faded back and slipped as he let go of a pass to an open receiver near the end zone. The ball was underthrown and the eighth-ranked Red Raiders, leading 21-7, took over. The game’s complexion could have changed dramatically if the […]
