Coaches chime in on Okimoto’s suggestion

By Paul Honda on April 19, 2016

Twenty years since he first began coaching at his alma mater, Randall Okimoto has proven to be a speak softly kind of guy. That’s always intriguing considering he was a record-setting running back at Farrington who went on to play at the University of Hawaii, where he earned his degree. “I knew from the start of my college career I wanted to be an educator. And the only place I wanted to be at that time was here at Farrington […]

By Nick Abramo on January 20, 2016

University of Hawaii football defensive coordinator and Kevin Lempa and defensive line coach Legi Suiaunoa went to Leilehua’s wrestling practice last week to reconfirm the school’s interest in Mules defensive lineman Netane Muti. Muti, who was recruited by former UH head coach Norm Chow, previously gave his oral commitment to Hawaii. “The new staff (under new head coach Nick Rolovich) came to meet me,” Muti said. The 6-foot-4, 280-pounder, who went both ways in high school, is being looked at […]

Leilehua’s Andres expected to start Friday

By Hawaii Prep World on October 7, 2015

Leilehua coach Nolan Tokuda told Paul Honda on Wednesday that he expects quarterback Kona Andres to start Friday’s OIA first-round playoff game against Moanalua. Andres has been the Mules’ starter since Week 2 when he took over for Kaleo Piceno, who suffered a season-ending injury in the season opener against No. 1 Punahou. The 5-foot-9, 170-pound sophomore had to leave last week’s 22-9 loss to Kaiser in the second quarter with concussion-like symptoms. He was cleared by a doctor on […]

Who’s Your Backup (QB)? Mules learn from past

By Paul Honda on October 6, 2015

Not so long ago, eight seasons, to be precise, a young whipper-snapper stepped up into the spotlight. The two quarterbacks on his school’s varsity team went down with injuries. The playoffs were about to kick off. He was a JV quarterback, and his team was also in the postseason. The call came. Andrew Manley became a varsity starter as a 10th grader, leading the 3-3 Leilehua Mules to the OIA title, and then the state championship. There is a surge […]
