Coach Speak: Feedback on new football format

By Paul Honda on November 26, 2016

The timing was right. The state tournament, officially branded the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football State Championships, came to a close last weekend. Coaches, all of them, were done for the year. What did they think of the new format, adding one division of eight teams, expanding to a 20-team format? Most of the coaches who responded by phone, text or e-mail had plenty to say, and yet they agreed that the new three-tiered look is, well, awesome. They also had […]

Longtime Leilehua football coach Nolan Tokuda told Hawaii Prep World this morning that he has retired from coaching. Tokuda cited family needs (young children) as his primary reason for stepping down after more than a decade as head coach. He will also apply for the athletic director position in July. He added that he supports longtime assistant coach Mark Kurisu as the next head coach. “Mark has already been named (head coach) this morning,” Tokuda wrote via text. “It’s Mark’s […]

The previous record was held by Darrien Shealy, who had 217 receving yards in 2010, also against Mililani. “The coaches always taught us to push through and fight until the end,” Phifer said. Despite […]

It’s the third meeting between the two schools in 42 days — a rarity according to Jerry Campany. Leilehua came from behind to defeat No. 1 seed Hilo in the first round while Mililani scored three late touchdowns to turn a close game into a 49-28 win over No. 4 seed Baldwin. Mililani […]

By Paul Honda on November 11, 2016

NERDPOD: Quarterbacks v3.0 The Star-Advertiser and Hawaii Prep World’s Paul Honda breaks down some of the best quarterbacks in the state. This is more of a run-through than a breakdown of QB statistics for the first time since almost two months. Numbers don’t tell the whole story, of course. That’s why this is Nerdpod, not fanpod. Some amazing, eye-popping numbers this season. QBs listed below in random order for the most part. QUARTERBACKS Tua Tagovailoa, Saint Louis Measurables: 6-1, 210, […]

Trojans, Mules ready for round 3

By Jerry Campany on November 10, 2016

Fans who bemoaned the loss of a true rivalry game between Mililani and Leilehua the last two years were repaid this season. The Mules and Trojans had faced off every year since 1998 before two years ago when the OIA decided the West was too tough and merged the divisions. They certainly made up for it this year, with the rivals meeting for the third time this season when they clash in the semifinals of the Division I state tournament […]
