Leilehua came to play despite 24-0 loss

By Nick Abramo on August 12, 2017

Even though the final score was 24-0, this was no walkover. No. 2 Kahuku, the defending Oahu Interscholastic Association champion, was clinging to a 10-point lead well into the fourth quarter before finishing strong to beat Leilehua. As has been the case for years, it was the Kahuku defense that carried the day in the home and season opener. The Red Raiders (1-0) came up with four interceptions, including three in the first half, to turn the tides. The defensive […]

St. Francis-Leilehua: What a game

By Brian McInnis on August 6, 2017

Here’s hoping the eventual sequel to St. Francis-Leilehua will come close to being as good as the original. That is a tough ask. Saturday night’s game was starved of offense for long stretches and play was downright sloppy at times, but in terms of a heart-pounding finish, you couldn’t have asked for more. Division II St. Francis, still a newcomer to the Oahu football scene, clawed into position for an improbable road upset of an OIA Division I mainstay, marching […]

Kurisu vows to keep Leilehua moving forward

By Nick Abramo on February 1, 2017

Mark Kurisu has lots of experience as Leilehua’s defensive coordinator and so the Mules probably won’t skip a beat now that he is the new head coach. Kurisu, who took over in November after veteran coach Nolan Tokuda stepped down, is already putting his stamp on the successful program. “This is a tremendous opportunity,” Kurisu said Wednesday in what is believed to be his first public comments since he got the promotion. “I have big shoes to fill, being the […]

Watson’s commitment to OSU was tough decision

By Christian Shimabuku on January 22, 2017

As one of six preordained participants of the Polynesian Bowl to make his college commitment during the game, the pressure was on Leilehua’s Charles Moku Watson to make a decision. After 10 scholarship offers and a decommitment to Washington State last fall, Watson narrowed his options down to Oregon State and BYU before Saturday night. Regardless, Watson didn’t decide until that morning, ultimately choosing the Beavers. “I kind of slept on it. It was a really hard decision. It took […]
