Kapolei impressive in opener, but road gets tougher

Kapolei coach Darren Hernandez will not be fooled into thinking early-season wins mean much. The Hurricanes opened 2018 with a 53-7 smashing of Castle, but beating a Division I team is what’s supposed to happen. Still, the team got a complete win. The offense looked good and the defense looked, as usual, mighty imposing. Kapolei, Mililani get work in during shortened scrimmage

The good news is Kapolei and Mililani got to play a long, nearly 90-minute first half in a football scrimmage Saturday night. But there was bad news, too. After a 10-minute break, the teams came onto the field for the second half and the referees were gone. According to bystanders, the referees thought the game was over. Kapolei’s top 2 QBs among those transferring out

Kapolei will be without its top two quarterbacks for the 2018 season, according to multiple sources. The Hurricanes’ Kaniala Kalaola, who will be a senior this fall, has transferred to Campbell. He split starting duties with Lonenoa Faoa, who transferred in to Kapolei from Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) late last August. Faoa, who will be a junior, has transferred to Liberty (Henderson, Nev.). Kapolei to take first mainland football trip

Coach Darren Hernandez is bringing his Kapolei Hurricanes to the mainland for a football game for the first time this fall. The Hurricanes will be going to Downey, Calif., to play against the Downey High Vikings on Aug. 31. The trip will also include stops at Universal Studios and Six Flags Magic Mountain as well as campus tours of USC and UCLA. Kapolei senior Dylan Toilolo, who played on both offense and defense for the Hurricanes this season, has been invited to the 2018 Polynesian Bowl. Toilolo, a 5-foot-11, 200-pound safety who has also played linebacker and running back, was an All-State first team selection as a junior linebacker at Saint Louis.
