Alabama offers Taulia Tagovailoa, too

By Nick Abramo on July 30, 2016

Taulia Tagovailoa is attending the Kapolei football team’s camp this weekend, so he might not even know at this moment that Saturday morning, the Alabama Crimson Tide offered him a scholarship. “We got a call from (Crimson Tide offensive coordinator) Lane Kiffin this morning and he told me they want to make an offer to Taulia,” said Galu Tagovailoa, Taulia’s father. “Lane told me that he wanted Taulia to be a part of their family.” It might not be a […]

McKnight and Manley on Kapolei FB staff

By Nick Abramo on June 30, 2016

Kapolei is the “second city” and, it seems, with social engineering at work, the masses are moving out that way. It’s not just an alternative urban center to Honolulu, it’s a magnet for young families looking for affordable housing. Look at the relative strength of the football teams out West, starting with Mililani and moving on to Campbell, Kapolei, Nanakuli and Waianae. Not a bad apple in the bunch, so to speak. Now, take a look at the public school […]

VIDEO: All systems go with June Jones at Kapolei

By Nick Abramo on April 12, 2016

There really is only one way to describe June Jones in relation to his craft: a master. And the master of offense is doing his thing at Kapolei these days as the offensive coordinator for the only head coach the Hurricanes have ever had — Darren Hernandez. The two have known each other a long time and have created a fine working relationship. On paper, Jones bringing his handiwork to Kapolei is just what the doctor ordered for a program that […]

Q & A: Hernandez on no-helmets football

By Paul Honda on March 31, 2016

Early this morning, Kapolei football coach Darren Hernandez posted a link to this ThinkProgress.org story about a 7-man semi-pro football league on the Eastern seaboard. After taking a look at the league’s highlight video and reading about its relative success in terms of head injuries and trauma, Coach Hernandez shared his reaction: “Where my beloved sport of football may be headed in the near future. The action is better than I thought it would be. Thoughts?” I reached him soon […]

Rolo, Hawaii first to offer Taulia Tagovailoa

By Nick Abramo on March 18, 2016

Taulia Tagovailoa got a little emotional when new Hawaii football head coach Nick Rolovich made him a scholarship offer on Thursday. According to his father, Galu Tagovailoa, Taulia — who will be a sophomore quarterback at Kapolei in the fall — started to cry a little bit. “Rolo asked him, ‘Are you crying?’ ” Galu Tagovailoa said. “Taulia said, ‘Ahh … no.’ It was funny and at the same time it was special.” During a phone interview Friday, Galu Tavovailoa, who was […]

Hernandez on how June Jones joined Hurricanes

By Nick Abramo on January 21, 2016

Darren Hernandez might need a new phone or at least a new phone number. The Kapolei football head coach has been inundated by calls and messages the last two weeks since he announced on TV that June Jones would be joining the Hurricanes as the offensive coordinator for the 2016 season. “It’s been a crazy two weeks. So many people wanted to give well-wishes. I feel like chopped liver,” he joked via telephone Wednesday. So, how did what seemed impossible […]
