Hurricanes find their balance

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 21, 2016

As might be expected with June Jones on the coaching staff and Taulia Tagovailoa behind center, Kapolei’s run-pass ratio was decidedly tilted toward the aerial attack in the Hurricanes’ first two games. The split was decidedly more even in Kapolei’s 44-13 win over Leilehua on Saturday in Wahiawa. Kapolei had thrown the ball on more than 81 percent of its plays a win over Campbell and a loss to Waianae with 83 pass attempts for 526 yards. In contrast, the […]

Six more games on Oahu scheduled for Saturday including a couple of afternoon tilts involving neighbor island teams. Let’s get to it. The Hurricanes dropped from No. 5 to No. 9 in this week’s Honolulu Star-Advertiser Top 10 after losing 35-14 to Waianae. The Mules play their third ranked team in as many weeks to start the season, but hey, at least it isn’t No. 1 Kahuku and No. 3 Punahou? History: Leilehua leads the all-time series 7-3 but the […]

Kapolei vs. Waianae: The way the ‘Canes win

By Billy Hull on August 9, 2016

If you played the word association game right now with Kapolei football, just about every answer would revolve around either sophomore QB Taulia Tagovailoa or offensive coordinator June Jones for obvious reasons. The leader of the program throughout its entire existence, Darren Hernandez, shouldn’t have a problem with that. After all, who wouldn’t want the combination of Jones and Tagovailoa controlling an offense at the high school level? But when it comes to Saturday’s showdown against No. 4 Waianae, Hernandez […]

VIDEO: ‘Sledgehammahs,’ war clubs enter scene

By Nick Abramo on August 8, 2016

Darren Hernandez walked sternly on to the Kapolei football field when the stadium announcer gave the fans a nod that the team was heading out of the locker room. He was immediately followed by linebacker Tyler Vasega holding a huge sledgehammer over his shoulder and walking a proudly like Paul Bunyan holding his ax. A few seconds later, the rest of the players ran single file out to the field to warm up for their game against Campbell. By the […]

Kapolei’s intricate routes look very familiar

By Nick Abramo on August 6, 2016

You’ve seen it before. That clockwork offense employed by the University of Hawaii under June Jones. Short routes, medium routes, deep routes. Kill ’em short and then throw a bullet over the middle. Then, when they’re least expecting it, have one receiver go in and one go out and let the defense decide who’s going to take who. Go deep. The quarterback’s arm is loaded and he knows exactly where the receiver is going to be. It took a quarter […]
