Ex-Bishop Gorman QB now at Kapolei

By Paul Honda on August 25, 2017

West Oahu has become quite the destination for visitors in recent years. It’s also a hotspot for football transfers. The latest is Lonenoa Faoa, a quarterback who played for Bishop Gorman last season. He is a 6-foot-2, 210-pound sophomore, and he is athletic. “Noa moved back to Hawaii this week,” Kapolei coach Darren Hernandez said on Friday morning. “He’s a smart kid with a great skill set. He was present at practice yesterday (Thursday), but he hasn’t practiced (on the […]

By Billy Hull on August 24, 2017

The first of 26 players from Hawaii to receive invites to the 2018 Polynesian Bowl over the next 13 weeks is Kapolei senior defensive end Kukea Emmsley. Emmsley, who is 6-foot-5 and 230 pounds, committed to Boise State just before the start of the season. He recovered a fumble in a 7-0 win over Waianae two weeks ago and had a sack in last week’s game against Castle that was eventually forfeited by the fifth-ranked Hurricanes for using an ineligible […]

No. 5 Kapolei forfeits win over Castle

By Hawaii Prep World on August 22, 2017

Kapolei High School released a statement Tuesday night acknowledging that the Hurricanes will forfeit last Saturday’s 41-7 win over Castle. “A miscommunication occurred regarding the dates and amount of football games ARS student-athletes were prohibited to participate in, per league rules. “The ARS student-athletes were disallowed from competing in the first two games (Campbell and Waianae), then we grade checked for the first two weeks of school as we do every year, and everyone on ARS passed their grade check […]

Kapolei’s offense hits a higher gear

By Nick Abramo on August 20, 2017

No June Jones. No Taulia Tagovailoa. No problem. The Kapolei offense is in fine hands with new offensive coordinator Amosa Amosa, new quarterback Kaniala Kalaola and … the head coach who has been there since the start of the Hurricanes football program — Darren Hernandez. The thinking by many in the preseason was that without Jones as OC and without Tagovailoa at QB, the Kapolei offense would be nowhere near where it was last year, when the Hurricanes made it […]

Kapolei has never had a 100-yard rusher against Castle. Darren Hernandez has never lost to Castle on Kapolei’s […]

Kapolei, Waianae wage heavyweight fight

By Nick Abramo on August 13, 2017

If defense is not your cup of tea, then you didn’t have an appreciation for the close-to-the-vest, 7-0 win by Kapolei over host Waianae on Saturday night. But, if Dick Butkus or Ronnie Lott are your kind of players, then you had a ball of fun watching this intense, early-season matchup of rivals and Honolulu Star-Advertiser Top-10 ranked teams. Train your binocolars on the line of scrimmage and watch the warriors slug it out. The fistfight was a draw. One […]

Faumui plays a big role in Kapolei win

By Nick Abramo on August 5, 2017

If the name Aaron Faumui sounds familiar, it’s because the Kapolei senior defensive lineman who was carrying a big stick Friday night in a 23-7 nonleague, season-opening road win over Campbell was a member of the 2015 Radford Division II state champions. Faumui was a youngster for the Rams before he transferred to the mainland. He’s back on Oahu and was an integral part of the sixth-ranked Hurricanes’ victory in the second installment of the Sledgehammah Showdown. Faumui had three […]
