Saturday morning in the lo‘i for Kamehameha I-AA Warriors

By Paul Honda on September 23, 2021

Two games into the ILH football season, one of the youngest teams in the league went outside the box on a bye weekend. The Kamehameha I-AA squad emerged wiser and muddier for their effort. “During the bye week, we came together as a team to work in the lo‘i in Heeia. They were thick in the mud weeding and preparing the lo‘i for kalo planting. It was a unique way to serve, to get a workout and to bond as […]

Kamehameha I-AA relying on size, savvy in the trenches

By Paul Honda on September 9, 2021

Wade Inn doesn’t have a lack of gargantuan-sized linemen. When the Kamehameha I-AA football team meets No. 7 ‘Iolani (2-0) on Friday afternoon at Aloha Stadium, the Warriors coach can count on sheer size up front. It’s just that he doesn’t have a surplus of them, particularly at the varsity level. “We don’t have a true second O-line, so eight of them rotate. We’re going to try whatever we can to gain advantages. We like to run the ball and […]

Kamehameha-Saint Louis postponed, Damien/Pac-Five moves to Aloha Stadium

By Paul Honda on September 8, 2021

Another week of ILH football and another schedule change. With the Saint Louis-Kamehameha game postponed due to COVID-19 protools, the Damien/Pac-Five contest scheduled for Saturday will now be the featured 7:30 p.m. game on Friday at Aloha Stadium. The 5 p.m. matchup between ‘Iolani and Kamehameha I-AA remains the same. Damien and Pac-Five had been slated to meet on Saturday morning at Saint Louis’ field. This marks the third time an ILH football game has been pushed back due to […]

Kamehameha I-AA coach Wade Inn: ‘We are very grateful’

By Paul Honda on September 2, 2021

Entering weekend No. 2 of ILH football, Wade Inn is stoked for his Kamehameha squad. The team formerly known as the junior varsity is now a I-AA team — the ‘B’ squad of one of the league’s premier, powerhouse programs. The Warriors are on schedule to face Damien on Friday afternoon, 5 p.m., at Aloha Stadium. “We are just excited for the opportunity to play football after all this time because of COVID,” Inn said. His team had a bye […]

VIDEO: Punahou-Kamehameha epic battle highlights

By Paul Honda on August 29, 2021

Never mind a hiatus of nearly two years for prep football in Hawaii. Kamehameha and Punahou left no stone unturned in the first football game since the fall of 2019. From John-Keawe Sagapolutele to Tevarua Tafiti to Astin Hange, Punahou overcame a third-quarter lull to rally for a 33-28 win. Kamehameha’s Noah Bartley, following an effective offensive line, finished with 251 yards from scrimmage. In all, Kamehameha finished with 341 yards of total offense: 26 rushes for 107 yards, and […]

Noah Bartley breaks out big for Kamehameha

By Paul Honda on August 28, 2021

Noah Bartley made a big splash on Friday. The Kamehameha running back was a force with 118 rushing yards on 20 carries, and six receptions for 133 yards against a stellar Punahou defense. Bartley scored two touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough in a last-minute, 33-28 loss to the Buffanblu at Aloha Stadium. “Whoever the running back was, he did a very good job,” Punahou coach Nate Kia said. “He’s a very good runner.” No matter what Punahou drew up defensively, […]

By Paul Honda on August 27, 2021

Ean Kamau-Waikiki hauled in a deflected 15-yard touchdown pass with 1:28 left as Punahou rallied for a wild 33-28 win over Kamehameha on Friday night at Aloha Stadium. The game was the first in Hawaii since the fall of 2019 and was one of two games to open the ILH varsity season. John-Keawe Sagapolutele was spectacular with 381 passing yards (28-for-41) and three touchdowns, including the go-ahead scoring pass to Kamau-Waikiki. That pass was intended for Astin Hange at the […]

Makoa Kupahu, Micah Kaonohi-Kaihenui are ‘difference makers’ for Kamehameha

By Paul Honda on August 26, 2021

The rigor involved with protocols, practices and now, actual game preparation, is unlike anything in prep football history. Abu Ma‘afala has dedicated his life to coaching. The sight of his Kamehameha Warriors on the field at Aloha Stadium on Friday night against Punahou can’t come soon enough. “We are blessed to be playing football. I’m glad that our players, coaches and support staff get an opportunity to participate in a real game and a year and a half. I’ll be […]
