Video: Kalani vs. Anuenue

By Paul Honda on October 4, 2013

Normally, Kalani-Anuenue is a competitive football game. Timing has changed, however. Kalani continues to progress and is on an upward thrust to success with a prolific passing attack. Anuenue hasn’t been its usual self this fall, not with the graduation of many seniors. Even with its small enrollment, Anuenue had produced some of the state’s top rushers each year. This is not one of those years. Na Koa are young and building. They suited up 18 in this game. Eighteen […]

Update: Kalani 60, Anuenue 6, final

By Paul Honda on September 28, 2013

5:25 p.m. Sunny, windy afternoon in Hawaii Kai. Noah Brum’s first pass of the day is a 25-yard touchdown pass to Trevor Yamashita. After another Anuenue fumble, Brum finds Brandon Roberts on a post route for a touchdown pass on fourth down. Falcons lead 14-0 with 9 minutes to go in the first quarter. 5:31 p.m. Brum tosses his third touchdown pass, a 6-yard strike in the back of the end zone to Blaise Manabe. Kalani 21, Anuenue 0, 4:51, […]

Kaiser, Kalani set records

By Billy Hull on September 14, 2013

The quality of football on Oahu’s East side has increased dramatically in the last two years with former UH coaches Rich Miano at Kaiser and both Ron and Cal Lee handling coordinator duties under Greg Taguchi at Kalani. Friday night, the two schools put up a record number of points in big wins. Over at Kaiser Stadium, the Cougars atoned for their stunning loss to Nanakuli in the semifinals of last year’s OIA White playoffs with a 70-20 blowout of […]

Pupule’s ballot: Still 1a and 1b

By Paul Honda on September 13, 2013

This may seem manic or chaotic or just wishy-washy, but here goes. I voted Kamehameha No. 1 on my ballot for the Star-Advertiser Prep Football Top 10 this week. Yet, I expect Punahou to win on a last-minute field goal against the Warriors tonight. Say whuhhh… It’s like this. The Warriors, my opinion, have proven to be worth of the top spot by virtue of five wins, almost all against elite competition. Punahou deserves the spot, too, but until we […]

Kalani’s Brum sets school record in loss

By Billy Hull on September 7, 2013

Noah Brum has been knocking at the door for the better part of two seasons as Kalani’s starting quarterback. On Friday night against Radford, he finally walked right in. The Kalani senior set a school record with 384 yards passing in a 47-37 loss to the Rams at Kaiser Stadium, breaking the previous high set by Ryan Kahana, who threw for 368 yards in a 42-20 loss to Roosevelt on Nov. 1, 1991. Brum has topped 300 yards in four […]

Part 1 Part 2 Part 1 has game highlights. Part 2 has post-game interviews with Kalani head coach Greg Taguchi and offensive coordinator Ron Lee following the Falcons’ 34-17 road win over the Mustangs.

Kalani football thinking playoffs?

By Billy Hull on September 4, 2013

Playoffs? For Kalani football? That’s where the Falcons find themselves heading into a pivotal game against Radford on Friday night in a battle of two quarterbacks who will throw it all over the field. The final numbers should be pretty big when Radford’s Cody Lui-Yuen (643 yards, 8 TD, 3 INT, 51-percent passing in 3 OIA White games) and Kalani’s Noah Brum (698 yards, 9 TD, 3 INT, 53-percent passing in 3 OIA White games) square off in a game […]

OIA White playoff race heats up

By Brian McInnis on September 1, 2013

I had the opportunity to watch four contenders for the Oahu Interscholastic Association White Division title over the weekend, and walked off the Kailua field Saturday night with a distinct sense of the league’s pecking order. Kaiser routed Radford in every aspect for a 48-7 result on Friday night and Kalani handed Kalaheo its first league loss, 34-17 on Saturday. The standings remain close. Kaiser leads at 2-0, and four other teams — Kalani, Kalaheo, Radford and Nanakuli — are […]
