Martinez steps down at Kaiser

By Billy Hull on September 30, 2017

Arnold Martinez informed school officials today that he is stepping down as Kaiser football coach. The Cougars forfeited all but one of their games this season due to low turnout. They were going to play their homecoming game against Moanalua on Sept. 22 before an altercation at the school four days earlier resulted in principal Justin Mew announcing they were canceling the rest of the season. Martinez, who went 51-51-1 in 11 seasons at Moanalua from 2003-13, was the fifth […]

Altercation, police presence led to Kaiser decision

By Nick Abramo on September 19, 2017

An altercation at the Kaiser football field Monday that required police attention led to the school’s decision to cancel the rest of the Cougars’ season. According to a source high up in the Kaiser administration, an argument between parents and head coach Arnold Martinez began after practice Monday. “The parents almost punched him and it got really ugly,” the source said. “The parents were irate and there was some pushing and shoving.” A security guard stepped in to keep the […]

Kaiser forfeits rest of its football season

By Hawaii Prep World on September 19, 2017

Kaiser has decided to forfeit the remainder of its varsity and junior varsity football seasons, according to a letter written Tuesday by principal Justin Mew. The letter, addressed to the Kaiser Cougar Ohana and obtained by the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, reads as follows: “Due to a series of prevailing events and extreme concerns for student and staff safety, the decision has been made, in consultation with Complex Area Superintendent Donna Lum Kagawa, to cancel both the Junior Varsity (JV) and Varsity […]

Kaiser will forfeit next 2 football games

By Nick Abramo on September 7, 2017

Kaiser’s beleaguered football team got more bad news Wednesday, when the school decided that it would be forfeiting the next two games, according to a source high up in the school’s administration. The announcement is not a surprise. The Cougars had already canceled three of their games (including two league forfeits) due to low roster numbers. The next two forfeited games were originally scheduled for Friday at Aiea and Sept. 16 at No. 2 Kahuku. Last Friday, the team played […]

Kaiser cherishes the pain

By Brian McInnis on September 2, 2017

As the Kaiser cheerleaders fanned out into three rows, a couple things were immediately apparent. The cheerleaders were well organized. And there were more cheerleaders than Kaiser varsity football players. When the Cougars — all 22 of them — journeyed into Ewa Beach on Friday night, it was like watching members of an endangered species fighting for their lives in the jaws of a predator. Jhoven Sausal took the opening kickoff return 75 yards to the house, launching what would […]

The struggle of shrinking football programs

By Paul Honda on August 18, 2017

The first two weeks of the prep football season offered a mix of questions and validation of the superpowers in the ILH and OIA. Neighboring rivals Mililani and Leilehua meet for battle on Friday night, and traditional rivals Kahuku and Waianae tussle on the Leeward Coast. Division II gets quite a spotlight, as well, when 1) Damien hosts a mainland school at what is now the busiest football hub in town, Skippa Diaz Stadium, and 2) Aloha Stadium hosts an […]

Kaiser forfeits game against Mililani

By Nick Abramo on August 7, 2017

Kaiser’s varsity football team will not play a scheduled game for the second week in a row, according to a source close to the situation. The Cougars’ varsity and junior varsity games at Mililani on Friday night have been canceled. The results will go in the books as forfeits by Kaiser, which has been having difficulties fielding enough varsity players to safely play an Oahu Interscholastic Association game. A few weeks ago, Kaiser principal Justin Mew announced that the Cougars’ […]
