Q&A: Kaimuki ironman lineman Sama Paama

By Paul Honda on September 18, 2018

Sama Paama keeps things focused and basic. The 6-foot-4, 355-pound two-way lineman — and occasional placekicker — has learned what it takes to turn a dream into reality. Carve away the distractions. Eyes on the prize. It’s a tool of success that he learned during his years at Kaimuki High School. Next stop: Washington. For years, all he would think about was USC. Then he started drawing attention from Hawaii, Pac-12 schools, including USC, as well as Big 12 and […]

Kaimuki takes sole possession of OIA D-II lead

By Brian McInnis on September 1, 2018

There were injuries galore, penalties aplenty, the odd scuffle and no timeouts spared. Kaimuki’s battle against McKinley at Farrington’s Skippa Diaz Stadium went long and late into Friday night. Maybe it was fitting that there was no working public address in the press box stemming from last week’s power outages due to Hurricane Lane; it was just a weird game, period, with both teams coming off inactivity. Finally, the Bulldogs put to bed a 22-0 win over the Tigers, as […]

GAME NIGHT 8/31: McKinley/Kaimuki

By Brian McInnis on August 31, 2018

Kaimuki 22, McKinley 0, FINAL ———- That’ll do it. A really ugly game, but Kaimuki moves to 3-0 overall and in OIA Division II. QB Jordan Kanakanui gets McKinley into the red zone with his arm and his legs. McKinley gets up to the 1, then is turned back by the Bulldogs’ line. That was really too bad for the Tigers. Pfeiffer-Kekoa is rewarded with a 7-yard strike from Fa’asau. 2XP is good, with Fa’asoa finding Quynton Brackens after a […]

Lack of depth doesn’t hurt Kaimuki

By Jeremy Nitta on August 11, 2018

Just as every team does before a game, the Kaimuki football team lined up next to their opponent on the sideline to sing their alma mater. As they did, one thing became glaringly obvious: the lack of numbers on the Kaimuki roster. “We weren’t really sure what it was going to be like tonight,” Kaimuki coach David Tautofi said. “Especially with us only suiting up 21 guys, we were prepared for it, but it worked out in our favor.” According […]

Clemens and Paama meet in the trenches

By Jason Kaneshiro on July 28, 2018

Punahou and Kaimuki won’t meet again this season, but Saturday’s scrimmage might have been just the first in a series of matchups between Buffanblu senior Duke Clemens and the Bulldogs’ Sama Paama. Paama played on both sides of the Kaimuki line on Saturday, having committed to Washington back in April. Clemens, who spent most of the scrimmage at center for Punahou, went deeper into the summer before picking UCLA in mid-July, setting up potential rematches down the road. They didn’t […]

PREPPING for 2018: Kaimuki Bulldogs

By Nick Abramo on July 20, 2018

THIRD IN A SERIES Before coach David Tautofi arrived, Kaimuki football had some down years. After three winning seasons in a row under the now fourth-year coach, it’s possible that the Bulldogs might be ready to turn the corner and get that elusive championship. A bid for the OIA Division II title last year fell short in a 7-0 loss to Pearl City in the semifinals. One year earlier, it was a 19-14 semifinal loss to Waialua that ended Kaimuki’s […]

Trip swayed Pa‘ama to pick UW over USC

By Nick Abramo on April 12, 2018

Kaimuki defensive lineman Evangelist “Sama” Pa‘ama announced his commitment to the University of Washington on Sunday, giving the Huskies a Division II recruit from Hawaii for the second straight recruiting class. Pa‘ama made his decision based on his successful recruiting trip there. Prior to that, he had his heart set on Southern California. Aside from Washington and USC, seven other schools have offered a scholarship to the 6-foot-5, 330-pound Pa‘ama — Arizona, Arizona State, Hawaii, Nebraska, Oregon, Utah and Virginia. […]

Kaimuki will challenge former QB in Vegas

By Nick Abramo on March 15, 2018

David Tautofi‘s connection to Las Vegas continues to get stronger. The Kaimuki coach is bringing his football team there for a game this year, and it just so happens it’s against Jordan Solomon‘s new team. Solomon was Kaimuki’s starting quarterback last season and has since transferred to Sierra Vista, which will play the Bulldogs on Sept. 7. In two seasons with Kaimuki, Solomon threw for 3,364 yard and 37 touchdowns and rushed for 351 yards and seven more scores. “Jordan […]
