By Paul Honda on November 2, 2020

Three games later, the 6-foot, 200-pound senior had accumulated 16 sacks — as a defensive end on the strong side. Maiava’s performance earned co-MVP honors as a DE in the PTP Sports National Showcase on Saturday. He and fellow Highlight-Hawaii D-end Tevarua Tafiti were among the three defensive ends honored. By Jerry Campany on October 27, 2020

On this date in 2001, Mulivai Pula opened the second half with an 80-yard touchdown run and No. 1 Kahuku beat Waianae 21-6 to complete an unbeaten regular season. The Red Raiders, who were ranked No. 18 in the nation, kept the game-plan simple in the driving rain. Pula finished with 111 yards on nine carries. It was Kahuku’s lowest point total of the season. Kahuku went on to share the OIA title with Kailua and won the state championship […]

Long-awaited projects begin at Kahuku, Campbell

By Paul Honda on October 16, 2020

Kahuku and Campbell are getting makeovers. Step by step, school by school, long overdue renovations are underway that will benefit football, soccer, and track and field student-athletes. Kahuku waited decades for funding to materialize, practicing on a flood-prone field. The push from community and State Rep. Sean Quinlan led to the project, which began on Monday. Nearly $10 million was released by Gov. David Ige. “Four years ago, before I was first elected, I knocked on doors in Koolauloa to […]

ON THIS DATE IN 1990: Mark Atuaia and Randall Okimoto face off

By Jerry Campany on October 12, 2020

On this date in 1990, Mark Atuaia rushed for 228 yards on 24 carries and Kahuku beat Farrington 26-14 at Aloha Stadium. The Red Raiders won the battle of unbeatens mostly because Farrington coach Skippa Diaz stubbornly double-teamed Kahuku end Itula Mili, who was held without a catch. Atuaia didn’t carry the ball until seven minutes into the game and was thrown for losses three times in the first half. Farrington running back Randall Okimoto had 111 yards on 21 […]

By Paul Honda on September 5, 2020

This year has been a strange time for Chansen Garcia, but there are still a few gems in the process. PrepStar Magazine named the Kahuku defensive back to its Class of 2023 All-American team. “I’m happy. I’m really happy. I’m blessed and thankful this happened for the future. I just keep working. That’s all I can do, is work,” Garcia said on Saturday. PrepStar reached out to Garcia two weeks ago after seeing video of individual position drills and his […]

Kahuku’s Tiger Adolpho, Alan Talanoa thriving in Idaho, Utah

By Paul Honda on September 2, 2020

The list of exports from Hawaii to the mainland has grown. In addition to a small number of high school football players suiting up in Utah, a few more made their debuts over the weekend. Among them was Kahuku quarterback Tiger Adolpho, who started for defending Idaho 5A state champion Rigby in a 51-0 win over Box Elder. Adolpho, a junior, made the move long before Hawaii’s football season was in jeopardy. On Aug. 5, the HHSAA postponed football, cross […]

Ed McCaffrey, N. Colorado make offer to Kahuku’s Zealand Matagi

By Paul Honda on August 16, 2020

Zealand Matagi has spent this highly irregular offseason getting leaner and stronger. As a Star-Advertiser All-State running back in 2019, Matagi suited up at 195 pounds on his 5-foot-10 inch frame. Since then, he has worked endlessly, running the beach, hitting the weights. Getting faster. Now at 190, the senior has the attention of Northern Colorado, which recently offered Matagi a scholarship. “They take me in as one of their own,” Matagi said of UNC coach Ed McCaffrey and staff. […]

Kahuku all-state RB Zealand Matagi decides against transfer to Utah

By Paul Honda on August 14, 2020

Depending on who knows who, there was or was not discussion within the Oahu Interscholastic Association about the most current issue: Would student-athletes be permitted to play one sport in two separate seasons and states in the coming academic year? That was a question for Kahuku running back Zealand Matagi, who had his eyes on Utah powerhouse Skyridge. Former Kamehameha quarterback Kia‘i Keone transferred there in late July and is on the roster. Matagi, a Star-Advertiser All-State selection, decided to […]
