LIVE BLOG: Kaiser 20, Kahuku 19, final

By Billy Hull on September 19, 2014

For just the second time in the last 25 years, Kahuku will make the long trek all the way East to Hawaii Kai to play at Kaiser Stadium against the host Cougars in an OIA Red game on Friday night. Since 1973, Kahuku has won 10 of the 13 meetings between the two schools, including three consecutive shutouts of the Cougars, who haven’t scored against Kahuku since a 49-6 loss on Nov. 1, 1991. KAISER/KAHUKU HISTORY Sept. 2, 2011: Kahuku […]

As usual, Kahuku can run (but how far?)

By Nick Abramo on September 17, 2014

There are three types of offenses and only one championship. Will a passing team such as Saint Louis or Leilehua or Mililani win the Division I state football championship in November? Or will it be a running team like Kahuku or Farrington? Don’t rule out a more balanced attack, something defending champion Punahou does better than all the others? Well, let’s consider Kahuku’s stake in all of this, shall we? The Red Raiders are No. 4 in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s […]

Holmes of the Braves

By Nick Abramo on September 7, 2014

St. John Bosco, the football team from Bellflower, Calif., that visited and beat Saint Louis 63-14 at Aloha Stadium last month, pounded Norwalk, Calif., 48-3 in its second game of the season on Friday night at Cerritos College. It turns out the Braves, who are No. 6 in the MaxPreps national rankings, have a local connection of sorts. Ben Holmes, who played right guard against the Crusaders, started at left guard against Norwalk. His father, Henry Holmes, who is a […]

Leslie has Kahuku quietly rolling

By Billy Hull on August 30, 2014

After the uproar surrounding Lee Leslie‘s hiring at Kahuku earlier this year, it’s hard to imagine the attention not shining brightly on the first-year Red Raiders coach. Somehow, that’s exactly the case despite Kahuku’s impressive 3-0 start. The Red Raiders continued to roll in the OIA Red with a 41-7 win over McKinley on Friday night at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium. Despite moving to 3-0 and up to third in the Star-Advertiser Top 10 poll, Kahuku has rolled along quietly as […]

LIVE BLOG: Kahuku 41, McKinley 7, Final

By Billy Hull on August 29, 2014

The third-ranked Kahuku Red Raiders are rolling under first-year coach Lee Leslie. After an impressive 33-19 win over a tough Kapolei squad in the opener, Kahuku rolled Waipahu 51-10 last week. The Red Raiders have won four in a row against the Tiges since McKinley beat the Red Raiders 14-13 in 2006. McKinley put up 28 points against Kahuku last season but was held to seven in its first game against Leilehua. The Tigers had to forfeit their season opener […]

Kahuku gets to the end zone

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 23, 2014

The statistics might be credited under “scoring offense,” but Kahuku’s defense and special teams have contributed a chunk of the Red Raiders’ point total two games into the season. Kahuku scored in all three phases against Kapolei in its OIA Red opener and again on Friday in a 51-10 home win over Waipahu. Kahuku returned a fumble for a touchdown and Kesi Ah Hoy took a kickoff back 94 yards in the Red Raiders’ 26-0 spurt on their way to […]

By Paul Honda on August 19, 2014

Extended version No. 10 Kapolei visits No. 5 Kahuku at Carleton Weimer Field. Because of inclement weather last week, this is the first game of the season for both teams, and it’s also the debut of Red Raiders coach Lee Leslie.
