VIDEO: #5 Kahuku vs. #4 Farrington

By Paul Honda on October 24, 2014

This was a sloppy, physical, mistake-prone game for both teams, but in the end, immensely exciting, thrilling and dramatic. Down to the last 10 seconds. Kesi Ah-Hoy’s 4-yard TD run gave the Red Raiders a 21-14 win in the OIA Division I semifinal round at Aloha Stadium.

LIVE BLOG: Kahuku 21, Farrington 14, final

By Paul Honda on October 23, 2014

First quarter Smashmouth rivalry and a big crowd at Aloha Stadium for this OIA D-I semifinal matchup. Kahuku loses its first possession on a fumbled lateral pass that was scooped up by the Governors #11 (not listed). Farrington got a 27-yard FG by Kekoa Sasaoka out of that turnover. FAR 3, KAH 0, 5:30. A of penalties so far. Both teams look a little bit anxious and excited. Must be a big game. Kahuku got rattled and had more illegal […]

Oahu powers need to avoid the bagel

By Jerry Campany on October 19, 2014

It’s a mantra shared by all coaches still competing as the OIA enters its semifinals. Thinking like that is a big reason why they have made it this far. But they may be wise to look at the big picture and realize that all they have to do is win one game in two chances to make it to the state tournament. The OIA semifinals pit Campbell vs. Mililani and Kahuku vs. Farrington on Thursday at Aloha Stadium. Winners play […]

Kahuku and Farrington on collision course

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 18, 2014

Lee Leslie has yet to experience a Kahuku-Farrington game. But he has a pretty good idea what to expect when the Red Raiders and Governors meet on Thursday. “That’ll be a big-time emotional game,” the first-year Kahuku coach said. “Both schools are rivals and that’s going to be a fun one.” A spot in the OIA Division I championship game and a state tournament berth will be at stake when the rivalry is renewed at Aloha Stadium. The programs were […]

OIA Division I playoffs bound to be riveting

By Nick Abramo on October 6, 2014

There were some highly entertaining, eye-opening regular-season finales in OIA Division I football last weekend, giving fans one last look before the playoffs start Friday. Kahuku proved it does indeed have a workable passing attack and it made all the difference in a 28-15 win over Waianae. Farrington followed with a 29-27 win over Campbell. Senior quarterback Tuli Wily-Matagi, who went through some early season struggles, looked poised in leading the offense that desperately needed a good showing after two […]

LIVE BLOG: Kahuku 28, Waianae 15

By Billy Hull on October 4, 2014

With storm clouds hovering over Aloha Stadium, it seems like the perfect weather for another Waianae-Kahuku clash. Kickoff will be at about 5:30 p.m. as the junior varsity games beforehand ran late. Waianae gets the ball first and immediately loses 15 yards on a bad snap that QB Ioane Kaluhiokalani can’t handle. Waianae manages a first down on third-and-14 as Kaluhiokalani finds John Barbieto for 14 yards. Seariders punt on fourth-and-1 from the 38. Let’s see what Kahuku has on […]

Wanted by No. 5 Kahuku: a workable offense

By Nick Abramo on September 29, 2014

Kahuku got a lot of love from voters in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Football Top 10 this week. The Red Raiders certainly belong among the state’s top 10 teams, but where on the list is a matter of conjecture. They moved up two spots to No. 5 after a 21-14 win over then-No. 4 Leilehua. But to get anywhere higher in the poll, or, more importantly, to advance far in the playoffs or states, Kahuku is going to have to solve […]

Kaiser shocks Kahuku with its defense

By Billy Hull on September 19, 2014

Everything broke just right for the Kaiser Cougars. After forcing six Kahuku turnovers only to turn them into 13 points, Kaiser seemed on the verge of giving away a potential upset of the third-ranked Red Raiders. But then, with two minutes on the clock, linebacker Parker Higgins capped off a monster night defensively with a big hit on running back Kesi Ah-Hoy to force yet another Kahuku fumble. With one final chance, Kaiser ran the ball 10 consecutive times on […]
