Road to Titletown: Brawn and big brains

By Paul Honda on November 2, 2014

It’s been a weekend (or two) chock full of prep football. Doubleheaders are nice, but great twinbills are unbeatable. The OIA title games at Aloha Stadium on Friday began, for players, coaches, bus drivers, fans and media dweebs (myself included) with the awesomeness of being stuck in rainy pre-Halloween traffic. I was stuck for almost 2 hours getting from Kakaako to the stadium, but I should count my blessings. Billy “Bonecrusher” Hull was trapped among the four-wheeled sardine cans for […]

VIDEO: #3 Kahuku vs. #2 Mililani (OIA final)

By Paul Honda on November 2, 2014

The first quarter gave fans the promise of a great, classic battle for the OIA Division I title. Instead, Kahuku QB Tuli Wily-Matagi was knocked out at the end of a 20-yard run and Mililani slowed the pace in a decisive 20-7 victory. McKenzie Milton tossed two TD passes and the Trojans defense locked down on Kahuku’s offense to earn a first-round bye in the state tournament.

Kahuku’s Wily-Matagi has concussion

By Nick Abramo on November 1, 2014

Kahuku senior starting quarterback Tuli Wily-Matagi suffered a concussion during a running play in Friday night’s 20-7 OIA championship game loss to Mililani. “I was diagnosed with a concussion,” Wily-Matagi said after the game. “I am going to try my hardest to get back. (Backup) Samuta (Avea) did a great job out there.” The loss of their senior leader was a big blow to the Red Raiders, whose offense tailed off with the sophomore Avea, who saw limited action in […]

TRENCH WARFARE: Padello vs.Vihimahi

By Billy Hull on October 31, 2014

We can’t only feature the Kahuku D-line against the Mililani O-line, could we? Here we go with a bonus edition of Trench Warfare as Mililani sack master Kaimana Padello, listed at 5-foot-11 and 205 pounds, goes up against Kahuku left tackle Aleeki Vihimahi. As always, each series is scored like a boxing round with a 10-point must system. This is purely for fun meant to shine the spotlight on the horses doing the dirty work up front for both teams. […]

TRENCH WARFARE: Tovi vs. Wily

By Billy Hull on October 31, 2014

It’s OIA championship night at Aloha Stadium as Kahuku and Mililani face off in a rematch of the 2012 D-I final. Both schools have combined to win the last six OIA titles as noted in our list of every OIA title game. The battle in the trenches should be a real treat to watch as Mililani’s offensive line will try to protect quarterback McKenzie Milton against a talented Red Raiders defense. In this episode of Trench Warfare, we will highlight […]

Embracing the grind: Kahuku prepares

By Paul Honda on October 29, 2014

They’re grinders, this year’s Kahuku Red Raiders. Through any challenge or adversity, they simply keep moving forward. With the OIA Division I championship game just two days away, they practiced in helmets, shoulder pads and shorts. The usual 7 p.m. practice on Wednesdays was moved up to 4 p.m., so they started the workout sharing Carleton Weimer Field with the girls soccer team. Grade checks had been a pressing concern for first-year coach Lee Leslie. One starter will be out […]

Essentially, it’s Mililani’s ‘O’ vs. Kahuku’s ‘D’

By Nick Abramo on October 28, 2014

One team won with ease. One barely scraped by. That was the OIA semifinals on Thursday night, and we are left with a showdown that pits the league’s best offense hands-down (No. 2 Mililani) against, arguably, the league’s best defense (No. 3 Kahuku) on Halloween night. Of course, there will be people who argue that the Trojans (10-0) have the best defense, and they may have a point. The Red Raiders gave up one more point than Mililani, 104 to […]
