VIDEO: Kahuku’s Big Red block party

By Paul Honda on November 9, 2014

Defense wins championships? Defense takes a good team to the brink, but somebody’s got to get the ball into the end zone. The Kahuku Red Raiders were spectacular and steady on Friday, limiting Hilo to 37 yards on 30 snaps in the first half. But they trailed 10-0. For most teams, a solution would be a few gadget or trick plays. Perhaps more gambling on defense. Risk. Adverse risk. For Kahuku and coach Lee Leslie, the best option was the […]

BIIF drops to 0-16 in state D-I

By Paul Honda on November 9, 2014

Fair weather is a friend to all football coaches. Fickle skies, not so much. What happens when you live in a place that is inundated by precipitation on many a game night? What happens when your team has to be built for torrential rain in a location so moist that switching out leather footballs for rubber ones is an ancient tradition? That’s been the boom-or-bust reality for many a East-side Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion over the decades. In East […]

By Paul Honda on November 8, 2014

The underdog Vikings of Hilo led 10-3 after three quarters thanks to a tenacious defense, outstanding special teams and efficient offense. Kahuku, however, got 138 yards and two TDs from RB/DT Salanoa-Alo Wily, a 6-1, 270-pound senior, in a 20-10 comeback win in the first round of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Division I State Football Championships at Aloha Stadium.

Hilo misses chance; Kahuku gets Punahou

By Nick Abramo on November 8, 2014

Hilo coach David Baldwin was not smiling while walking down the handshake line after his Vikings allowed 20 points in the second half of a 20-10 loss to No. 3 Kahuku in the state Division I quarterfinals at Aloha Stadium on Friday night. Only Baldwin knows what he was thinking, but from the outside it looked like he was angry that such a whale of an opportunity passed the Vikings by. Had No. 9 Hilo won, it would have probably […]

By Billy Hull on November 7, 2014

The Hilo Vikings are looking to become the first BIIF team to win a game in the Division I state tournament. In order to do that, the Vikings defense will have to stand tall against the Red Raiders. In the latest episode of Trench Warfare, Hilo senior defensive tackle Kiliona Pomroy (5-11, 250) will wage war against Kahuku’s best offensive lineman, senior Siotame Uluave (6-3, 295). As we wait for kickoff, here’s a look at our other Trench Warfare battles […]

Double the fun: Salanoa-Alo Wily (extended)

By Paul Honda on November 4, 2014

(Below is the extended version of a feature story on Kahuku football player Salanoa-Alo Wily. The slightly shorter version was published in Tuesday’s edition of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.) Beyond the B-plus grade-point average and the wrecking-ball style of play, he just wanted to come home. Salanoa-Alo Wily is a walking contradiction to some. At 6-foot-1 and 270 pounds, he loves to draw. He hits the books consistently. As a fullback at Kamehameha during his first two seasons of high school, […]
