Punahou survives an emotional affair

By Billy Hull on November 16, 2014

Walking onto the Aloha Stadium field mere seconds after Kanawai Noa‘s interception sealed Punahou’s 13-10 win over Kahuku in the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA State Football Championships on Saturday night, it immediately became apparent this wasn’t your typical high school football game. Emotions, as they always do, filled both sidelines. The thrill of victory on the Punahou side after Jet Toner‘s game-winning 48-yard field goal was easy to see. Dejection on the faces of Kahuku’s players after it nearly pulled off […]

TRENCH WARFARE: Kaumatule vs. Tualau

By Billy Hull on November 15, 2014

It’s time for the main event at Aloha Stadium as No. 1 Kahuku takes on the school with the most state championships ever in Kahuku. This Trench Warfare will focus on recent Oregon commit Canton Kaumatule (6-7, 290) going up against Kahuku’s Victor Tualau (6-2, 340). Full disclosure, I actually have to write the game story for this so I can only do one TW matchup and I might be a little slow with it. I will try my best. […]

By Paul Honda on November 14, 2014

A shorter version of this story appears in Saturday’s Star-Advertiser One team is seemingly omnipotent, a Galactus that consumes opposing teams, a squad with massive numbers despite a light number of games played. It’s Punahou and Kahuku, and in a rare occasion, it will be the Red Raiders who are the underdog. No. […]

Defense, with heart, drives Kahuku

By Nick Abramo on November 13, 2014

The typical Hawaii high school football fan is thinking No. 2 Mililani (11-0) and No. 1 Punahou (7-0) are on a collision course for the state Division I championship. But fans of No. 3 Kahuku (9-2) are not your typical fans, and the Red Raiders players are equipped with more than your average heart. This tight-knit North Shore community loves its Kahuku football, and the sentiment emanating from the practice field on Thursday for Saturday’s game can be summed up […]

Private school pipeline (extended)

By Paul Honda on November 11, 2014

>> The North Shore is often raided for its star athletes, and that’s just part of the subplot in Saturday’s state football semifinal game between No. 1 Punahou and No. 3 Kahuku (Here’s the longer version of this morning’s story in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.) All any parent wants for his or her children is opportunity. The lure of a better life — and happiness — is the driving force for all kinds of life-changing decisions. For many people, it was […]

D-1 football semifinals have familiar feel

By Billy Hull on November 10, 2014

If you feel like you’ve seen a lot of the teams remaining in the Division I state football playoffs — you have. The same four teams to reach the semifinals in 2012 are back again two years later as Farrington and Mililani meet in the first game on Saturday night at Aloha Stadium, followed by Kahuku and Punahou. After failing to qualify for the state tournament for just the fourth time in 2013, the Red Raiders have reached the semis […]
