Kahuku’s losses mount: Avea transfers

Kahuku sophomore Samuta Avea, a two-sport varsity athlete with a big future, is going to be a big star one day. It just won’t be at Kahuku. Reports from the North Shore have circulated, and the 6-foot-4 basketball and football player is moving to Utah. He will transfer to Bingham High School. Kammerer is new Kahuku interim football coach

James Kammerer is the interim varsity football coach at Kahuku, a source close to the situation told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser and Hawaii Prep World on Tuesday. Kammerer is the head JV football coach for the Red Raiders. A 2002 Kakuhu graduate, he was a Honolulu Star-Bulletin second-team All-State wide receiver in 2001. Coach Lee Leslie will always remember his short time as the Kahuku football head man. He thanks everyone involved with the program “from the bottom of my heart” in this video from his home in Idaho. The boys from the Hukilau Cafe 7-man team are back home from Las Vegas with memories — and priceless winnings — for a lifetime. The team, coached by Darren Johnson, went 9-1 in the Pylon Las Vegas 7v7 Tournament. The team was unbeaten in pool play, then reached the quarterfinals before falling 29-27 to eventual champion Ground Zero of Seattle, Wash., in Sunday’s championship bracket. Kapolei offensive lineman Pesi Savea chose San Diego State over Texas Tech, according to a Pacific Islands Athletic Alliance website post Tuesday night. Savea had been waiting for some test scores to come in and now he is eligible to sign his letter of intent for the Aztecs at Wednesday’s PIAA signing ceremony at the Sheraton Waikiki.
