Upgrade in grades shows at Kahuku

By Nick Abramo on August 10, 2015

New Kahuku football head coach Vavae Tata and former head coach Lee Leslie have more than their experience with the Red Raiders in common. Both men are dedicated to the full package of the word student-athlete. No good grades, no play. And big strides have been made at the school in this area, not just in football, but all sports. Yes, the pride of Kahuku, which has always been football, may be starting to shift to academic achievement, too. Poor […]

Kahuku, in bulldoze mode, flattens Campbell

By Nick Abramo on August 8, 2015

Running room on one side. The door slammed shut on the other. Pretty simple. Kahuku’s line had its way with Campbell’s on both sides of the ball and it resulted in a 50-0 trouncing at Carleton Weimer Field on the North Shore on Friday night. “What a way to start the season” could be a phrase for both the Red Raiders and the Sabers. It just depends on your inflection. Upbeat for Kahuku. Head down and slow, with your hand […]

Red Raiders’ Heffernan ready to roll

By Nick Abramo on August 3, 2015

Kahuku senior center Jed Heffernan is one the Red Raiders’ team leaders on offense, and he is waiting in eager anticipation for the season opener much more than previous seasons. Why? That’s because early last season, Heffernan’s junior campaign came to a halt because of a cracked vertebrae. “It was really, really hard going to practice all last year, just watching and not playing,” Heffernan said at a practice session last week. “And it was painful to watch the offense […]

By Nick Abramo on August 3, 2015

Countdown story (subscription required) 2015 Kahuku coaching staff 41 years of Kahuku football (1973-2014) Kahuku Football Home Kahuku offensive coordinator John Hao has an interesting decision to make. The former Saint Louis standout quarterback has something that he didn’t think was possible: four quarterbacks who can legitimately throw the ball. So, not a bad problem to have for the team ranked No. 4 in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Preseason Top 10. But, which one will rise up? Kesi Ah-Hoy, the veteran […]

Hao says Tagovailoa is best of Passas’ bunch

By Nick Abramo on August 2, 2015

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser and Hawaii Prep World sportswriters were at least a little surprised early last season when Saint Louis coach Cal Lee told one of them that sophomore Tua Tagovailoa was named the starting quarterback to replace incumbent senior starter Ryder Kuhns. Kuhns put up fine numbers (2,016 yards and 25 touchdowns passing) as a junior and was off to a fast start as a senior. In came Tagovailoa, the dual runnning and passing threat, and he went on […]

Mililani holds off Kahuku in Tata’s first test

By Nick Abramo on July 31, 2015

Two words: McKenzie Milton. If you don’t know by now, he makes the Mililani offense go, and he’s been doing it for two-plus years. Milton and the Trojans defeated Kahuku 44-30 on Friday night in a scrimmage at Mililani’s John Kauinana Stadium. At times, Kahuku pressured Milton, but the senior quarterback still found holes to pass and run through in leading the way. It was a statement game of sorts for the Trojans, the defending state champions who stopped the […]

Kahuku pumped to play Mililani state champs

By Nick Abramo on July 30, 2015

After wrapping up their Thursday practice session, Kahuku’s football players went home for dinner, homework and sleep. About 28 miles to the southwest, Kahuku’s opponent for a 7 p.m. Friday scrimmage — the Mililani Trojans — were on their home field easing to an unofficial 48-14 scrimmage win over Leilehua. Now, it’s Kahuku’s turn to go to Mililani’s John Kauinana Stadium and see what they have in the tank against the Trojans, who went undefeated last season on the way […]

Sasaoka kicking for Kahuku this season

By Nick Abramo on July 30, 2015

Reliable place-kicker Kekoa Sasaoka is playing for Kahuku this season after transferring earlier this summer from Farrington. Sasaoka, who is 5 feet 9 and 219 pounds, made the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s All-State second team as a junior for the Governors a year ago. Earlier this week, Farrington coach Randall Okimoto confirmed Sasaoka transferred to the OIA rival Red Raiders. On Thursday, Sasaoka was at Kahuku’s practice session on the campus’ upper field. “You know when he’s kicking, if it’s 40 yards […]
