Ton of Fun: Kahuku’s 2,497-Pound Stampede

By Paul Honda on October 19, 2015

When the Kahuku Red Raiders go to work on the football field, it’s not just about hard hats and hammers on the defensive side. This year, it’s been about coach Vavae Tata’s penchant for physical domination at every point of contact. That’s why, when offensive coordinator John Hao installed a new look two games ago against Waianae, it was the culmination of several weeks’ worth of reps, reps and getting the offense to believe. Now, Kahuku has nine focused blockers […]

By Paul Honda on October 18, 2015

Pete Carill, the legendary Princeton basketball coach who used throwback offensive schemes to keep his Tigers competitive against big-time colleges, once said that putting high-flying scorers like Michael Jordan into his sets would make them even better. When Kahuku implements its traditional running lanes out of its jumbo hybrid formation — unveiled against Waianae in the OIA regular-season finale less than three weeks ago — it looks much like something out of the 1940s. Just switch out 200-pound linemen of […]

Connection here is a little slow, please bear with this pupule. Plus, these new PVC pipes on the fence in front of the press box (for support) kill my video camera view, so I’ll be standing to handle the camera. Typing might be a challenge. Gut feeling, this is a […]

Kapolei, Kahuku become familiar foes

By Paul Honda on October 16, 2015

Kapolei can’t seem to avoid Kahuku no matter what changes come to the OIA divisional structure. On Aug. 14, the ‘Canes lost to Kahuku 27-7. Last season, they lost a regular-season opener at Kahuku 33-19 on a night when offensive lineman Noah Punahou Mahelona‘s father, John, collapsed in the bleachers and later died. Two months later, Kapolei lost at Kahuku in a playoff matchup, 9-0. Kapolei does have a history of winning at one of the toughest sites for any […]

By Nick Abramo on October 11, 2015

Offensive fireworks are the norm in high school and college football these days, but don’t discount defense and what it can do for your team. Think back to the old days, if you can, about your proverbial daddy’s football team. That’s when runs up the gut were what you did extensively and close games were usually decided by a 2-point conversion or the unsuccessful attempt at such. For every 76-53 rampage where there is all kinds of offensive wizardry in […]
