Kahuku vaults to No. 24 nationally

By Nick Abramo on November 22, 2015

Kahuku’s convincing 39-14 victory over Saint Louis for the state Division I championship helped the Red Raiders move up 90 spots to No. 24 in the MaxPreps national computer rankings released Sunday. The Red Raiders capped their 13-0 season on Friday at Aloha Stadium. They could go up or down from there, depending on how other top teams across the country fare as their seasons wind down. The Crusaders fell 77 spots to No. 113. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Top 10 […]

Kesi Ah-Hoy and a burst of rubber granules

By Nick Abramo on November 21, 2015

Boy, have times changed. Cigar-smoking, fedora-wearing coaches long ago (or so we’ve heard) used to say things in a gruff voice, like “All we need is 3 yards every carry and we get a first down every four downs.” Young’uns’ eyes would sparkle as they admired the plain, brutal logic of that thinking and they would immediately be full-fledged, card-carrying members of that plan. Until, sometimes, they realize it’s easier said than done. For many, it would be three-and-out. For […]

VIDEO: Kahuku sets tone with pregame haka

By Hawaii Prep World on November 21, 2015

If there was ever a 15-yard penalty committed by a team that was worth it, this was it. Kahuku set the tone for its 39-14 thumping of Saint Louis to claim the Division I state title in the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA State Football Championships on Friday night by coming out near midfield during the coin toss and doing a haka. The crowd of 19,699 at Aloha Stadium ate it up. Here’s the video courtesy of MoStreetProductions on YouTube: And here […]

Five Kahuku players took a turn at quarterback on Friday and the Red Raiders tossed in a couple of key wrinkles. But the front line remained the engine for the Red Raider offense in a drive to the Division I state championship. During the regular season, the Red Raiders committed to tucking in behind the offensive line and pounding out first downs — a mind-set first-year head coach Vavae Tata referred to on multiple occasions as staying true to the program’s […]

Kahuku’s stifling defense has its day

By Nick Abramo on November 21, 2015

This Kahuku defense, they had it covered. You could go all the way back to the first game of the season, when the attacking Red Raiders defensive unit stopped Campbell cold. That was the first sign of things to come. And it just kept getting better and better. All 11 starters made names for themselves and the team finished up by shutting down three potent offenses in a row, culminating in Friday’s 39-14 victory over Saint Louis for the Division […]
