Maiava comfortable behind Kahuku O-line

By Nick Abramo on August 5, 2016

Hawaii Prep World got its first glimpse of freshman Sol-Jay Maiava in a Kahuku uniform on Wednesday. During the summer, the quarterback was given a scholarship offer by Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh. That’s the same Harbaugh who coached the San Francisco 49ers to the Super Bowl a few years back. The same Harbaugh who played for Michigan and piloted the Indianapolis Colts’ offense as an NFL quarterback. So, what gives? Why now? Is Maiava that good? Well, one practice doesn’t […]

Kahuku football recruits enjoy the process

By Nick Abramo on August 4, 2016

Star-Advertiser Preseason Top 10 Countdown Today: No. 1 Kahuku Three Kahuku seniors are being recruited by Division I FBS colleges, and it’s no surprise that all of them are on the defensive side of the ball. All three talked a bit about their recruiting experiences after practice Wednesday. Kesi Ah-Hoy, the running back turned quarterback turned safety, has four offers — BYU, Army, Oregon State and Hawaii. “In the summer I got two offers — from Oregon State and Hawaii,” Ah-Hoy […]

VIDEO: Ah-Hoy carries Kahuku legacy forward

By Nick Abramo on August 4, 2016

Kesi Ah-Hoy is about as close as you can come to the full incarnation of the ultimate Kahuku football player. A cool customer off the field, Ah-Hoy is anything but on it. When Ah-Hoy was a sophomore, the head coach at the time, Lee Leslie, had a glint in his eye when he talked about Kesi. “That kid is just a great athlete and something special,” Leslie would say about Ah-Hoy that year, when he was a running back and […]

Kahuku opens season ranked No. 39 in nation

By Billy Hull on August 1, 2016

The last preseason MaxPreps high school football rankings were released Monday with no big changes. Defending HHHSAA state champion Kahuku remained at No. 39, where it’s been most of the offseason, heading into the official start of the season Friday in Hawaii. Hawaii is the first state to officially start its high school football season although the Red Raiders don’t open play until Aug. 12 at Leilehua in their OIA opener. Kahuku will scrimmage Farrington at Carlton E. Weimer Field […]

LIVE BLOG: Kahuku/Farr/Pun scrimmage

By Paul Honda on July 30, 2016

Slightly behind schedule but it’s awesome nonetheless. PUN offense vs. KAH defense Buffanblu fairly conservative, first play is a dive for little gain. Third and 1, long pass is caught out of bounds. Great dive for that. KAH #10 and #21 virtually untouched for sacks. Sorry no rosters for scrimmages. I’ll track back later for IDs. PUN punt snap dribbles but scrimmages mean no serious heat on special teams. KAH offense vs. FARR defense Very conservative by KAH, but they […]

Gerald Welch returns ‘home’ to Saint Louis

By Nick Abramo on July 12, 2016

Gerald Welch spent last season as an assistant coach to Vavae Tata for the state champion Kahuku football team. This season, he will be back home, so to speak. Welch, one of the top receivers in Hawaii high school football history, is a wide receivers coach under his former head coach Cal Lee at Saint Louis. Not bad. If you are going to take a step down from the state champions, you might as well latch on to the state […]

Michigan offers Kahuku freshman quarterback

By Hawaii Prep World on June 29, 2016

The eight-time and defending HHSAA state football champion Kahuku Red Raiders might look a little different on offense the next few years. Freshman quarterback Sol-Jay Maiava, who will compete for the starting job this season, is so talented that he received his first Division I scholarship offer on Tuesday from Michigan and head coach Jim Harbaugh. Harbaugh, who was in town for his ‘Summer Swarm’ camp over the weekend, didn’t leave without serving up a huge offer for the Kahuku […]
